Grid:
1- Rouse (XR4Ti/A) 1m37.67
2- Brodie (Starion/A) 1m38.01
3- McGrath (Rover/A) 1m39.29
4- Leech (Rover/A) 1m39.84
5- Longman (Escort RS Turbo/B) 1m40.10

16-Belcher (RS1600i/C) 1m46.31
17-Crudgington (Corolla/C)
18-Morris (RS1600i/C)
19-Curnow (RS1600i/C)
20-Moss (RS1600i/C)
21-Watts (RS1600i/C)

A slightly smaller grid without the extra cars seen at the European GP meeting. One addition to the entry- the second Starion, last seen at the British GP in July, this time for Japanese works Mitsubishi driver Kunimitsu Takahashi. According to Autosport the previous week, this was an opportunity for Takahashi to get some mileage in the Brodie Starion before the Fuji and Macau Group A races- Brodie and BBW Motorsport would be preparing two of the three Mitsubishi entries for these races, with Takahaski sharing a car with Brodie at Fuji (I've already posted the full text of the article in the Starion thread)
One other change to the entry here- Chatfield was back in a Capri rather than the 635CSi he'd used at Brands. (No idea which Capri he raced here- the white ex-CC car or the red ex-Spice example- a curious season for Chatfield, he appeared at 7 rounds, and used 3 different cars... )

I'd be very surprised if it wasn't....As I remember, Walkinshaw's business interests were fairly diverse- not just racing, but road car conversions, car dealerships, Gloucester Rugby Club etc

I don't recall the exact story behind Herbie Clips, whether it was a Walkinshaw-owned company, or just that part of the TWR Group held the UK distribution rights or whatever for the product.

The actual Herbie Clip product is apparently still around, manufactured by a company called HCL Fastenings- they only seem to have been around since the mid-90's though.

If it had originally been a TWR-owned company, wonder if it changed hands before the TWR Group collapsed after the Arrows F1 saga?

Yes the Robbie Francevic, Mark Petch run car. A real pain to the Aussie regulars!

Considering that it took Volvo another 8 years to enter the BTCC, it was slightly surprising to me that they didn't have a presence in the UK series. Volvo's by that time were in all the other major Group A series.

I have a strong feeling that it was the ex Spice car employed for this round KA?

Like you suggest, it was strange that he ran 3 different cars. Two were very nice but obsolete (ignoring the odd and likely illegal pace of the Esso car at Oulton....) and one that should have been reasonably competitive but never worked properly IIRC?

Brian was clearly trying to make a go of it as an enthusiastic privateer but perhaps underestimated what one needed to do (or spend) at the time so just concentrated on enjoying driving his toys.

a quick thought- Chatfield's 635 was the ex-BS/Cheylesmore/Grundig car, and it next appeared in the hands of Barry Barnes at the beginning of '86 (Finished 8th in the first BTCC round and a DNS at the Donington ETC race, sharing with Les Blackburn)
http://www.racingsportscars.com/etcc...-04-06-031.jpg

The last of Chatfield's few 1985 BTCC appearances in the car was at the European GP meeting at Brands- where Barry Barnes appeared in a one-off Terry Drury Alfa drive.

Could the deal to sell the 635 have been done at Brands and it went home with Barnes rather than Chatfield at the end of the meeting?

Interesting thought KA, this could well have been the case considering Brian was out in one of the Capri's at the Silverstone finale.

I wonder how we could confirm it though?

There's no mention in the Autosport issue for the week between Brands and Silverstone as far as I can tell, or in the Motoring News report from Brands (unfortunately I didn't keep the rest of the MN issue, just cut out the BTCC report) The Silverstone race reports might have it, but if I've still got them, they're 200 miles away at present

Another thought, that's also relevant to 1984 and 1986.

When TW came along and blew everyone away in the spare Bastos car at Brands the question must surely be, how did he manage to do what couldn't be done the year before (until their withdrawal) by the regular drivers of the Sanyo cars: I.E beat Rouse?

Ok, so the Rover had some experimental rubber on but the '85 Vitesses weren't much different to the '84 cars which struggled against Rouse's private Rover, let alone the '85 Sierra. Surely Walkinshaw's prowess couldn't be down to rubber alone. Could it be that the series was weaker than previously?

Any thoughts?

Tyres were certainly a factor- the 17" Dunlops used on the TWR Rovers in Europe in '85 apparently weren't available to the BTCC privateers, and it's interesting that immediately after being beaten by Walkinshaw at Brands, Brodie switched the Starion to Pirellis for the last couple of rounds....
.
Apart from that, thinking about Rover's ETC results in '84 and '85, I wonder if they had moved on a step in performance- they were pretty dominant in the early-season ETCC races, and their '84 results in Europe hadn't been that spectacular?
I can see some logic in the argument that the BTCC wasn't as strong as it had been before the mid-84 Austin Rover pull-out- the CC/BMW GB 635s had gone, Brodie's Starion was as fast as ever but still had trouble translating that into race wins, and Toyota seemed to be struggling with the Supra after the promise of their first win in '84- a mixture of Sheene's lack of experience, a lot of DNFs and the car being totalled at Thruxton probably didn't help.
On the other hand, when they came up against the ETC cars at Silverstone for the TT, Brodie put the Starion on pole (though never looked like a contender for the win in the race?) and Rouse looked very quick leading the early laps before a suspension breakage dumped him in the wall at Copse....

Sheene always said that the new car built up after the Thruxton crash simply wasn't as well sorted as the other car. Win Percy had done a fantastic job developing the car the previous year and it was very well set up by the time Sheene stepped into it for 1985. The new car didn't have the benefit of Win's experience, and it showed in the results.

EDIT: Just looked at the '86 thread and realised that this is also relevant - and probably more appropriate - there.

Thanks for filling those in- I didn't have times for the cars that finished a lap down (Hodgetts etc) and I'd accidentally credited Dowsett with Chatfield's time

Thank you for the question, carrera. Fastest lap for the classes for rounds:
5 - Thruxton, 1985.05.27
8 - Silverstone, 1985.07.21
9 - Snetterton, 1985.08.11
12 - Silverstone, 1985.10.13

The complete grid for:
6 - Silverstone, 1985.06.09
9 - Snetterton, 1985.08.11
12 - Silverstone, 1985.10.13
The final Silverstone race has a complete grid line-up but the bottom half of without times.

The grid positions for Patrick Watts and Alex Moss for and in general times for all contesters:
8 - Silverstone, 1985.07.21

The number of laps and elapsed time for rounds:
5 - Thruxton, 1985.05.27
6 - Silverstone, 1985.06.09
9 - Snetterton, 1985.08.11

And in general elapsed times for runners not completing the entire distance (lapped or retired contenders) would be nice too.

..and probably a lot more.

8 - Silverstone, 1985.07.21

The number of laps and elapsed time for rounds:

9 - Snetterton, 1985.08.11

And in general elapsed times for runners not completing the entire distance (lapped or retired contenders) would be nice too.

..and probably a lot more.

Is it possible to list each round with all the info to date and then I and others can hopefully complete each one 100%.

Any reason why this race at the Silverstone GP circuit was held over 20 laps, as the remaining 3 races of 1985 on the circuit was restricted to 15 laps?

The date suggest a Saturday race with the FIA F3000 running on Sunday. Is the 23rd the correct date? Completely OT, but this would be the first ever F3000 race.
