I haven't listened yet either, and at the risk of sounding like an idiot, did they mean the tire construction design was 5 years old or the tires themselves were literally 5 years old?

I think the deign is many years old as they haven’t needed to change it.
On IMSA Radio at some point during the night they reported that someone from a team thought that some of the tyres were from last year’s race. |

So, our third trip to Daytona for the Rolex (1999, 2017 and 2018). Of course, the last couple of years, we have seen a much bigger event, many more people and the new stadium building as well.
After parking outside last year, we got the upgrade to infield parking which was a real boon. So much so that we didn't walk round to the grandstands. Borrowed a step ladder from our VRBO hosts which gave excellent views for photos over the fence. Already planning to return next year - IMSA and Conti seem to be (overall) on an upward trajectory, so we want to see it while we can. Despite the IMSA Radio team's idiosyncrasies, I'd much rather have them available on FM radio to listen to than not ! |

I would expect that some of the tires were left over from years past. just trying to empty out the warehouse. Does the rubber go bad?

Yes. Obviously different compounds become garbage at different rates, so who knows how long each tire takes.
And I'm sure different tire companies have different definitions of too old to safely race on as well as too old to be seen raced on. |

I don’t know if these tyres degrade significantly over the year, but tyres do over time. Whether it is one year or ten years depends. I wouldn’t be happy with Road or race tyres over a few years old and I’m not pushing to that limit.

and we should add, how the tyres were stored. As somebody else said here, maybe Continental is using the existing stock they have instead make all new tyres, because they are leaving. This is all just guessing.
I think the RaceEngineering article is more convincent about what happaned with the tyres. |

Yeeah, racing slicks need to be stored in temperature / climate controlled conditions in order to remain stable. The cold in particular tends to degrade them. I'm not sure how much for safety and how much for performance, but it is a thing.

Still too many failures on cars that ran within their (Continental's) limits even if they said it was a new tire. There's something wrong with them and it's pretty damning imo they say the tires were from last year. I bet a lot of teams are looking forward to using Michelin next year.

It seems track specific, and related to the banking loads at Daytona which we don't see anywhere else. |

if you watch the race replay on you tube and pay attention to the WTR onboard when ranger was driving, youll see he was attacking the curbs at the bus stop.at times sounded like the car would slam onto the track after hitting the curbs...
same with pipo on a few occations |

Attacking the bus stop curbs -- assuming you keep out of the dirt and have appropriate tire pressures (not on your out lap w/ new tires), there's no harm to the tire in attacking all the curbs at Daytona. -mike |

Is that Continental's 'unofficial' view as well?
