Unfortunately the circuit is now closed until the first round off the Winter series on January 3rd. By this time all improvements will be completed

Any chance of photos of the work in progress to give us an idea as to what has changed? Either here or on the Lydden website?

I will be most intrigued to see what levels of debris fencing get erected.

according to the regulations a minimum of a 0.9 meter high fence must be errected around the circuit, which is already present. Nothing said about debries fencing, but it recommends tarmac sections be to FIA grade 2 specification. Obviouslly the fia will advise if any additional higher fencing will need to be erected.

That's good - don't want lots of fencing obscuring the view.

Was really hoping that as the spectators look down on the track at Lydden, that might be enough to avoid extra fencing. Mayenne didn`t have debris fencing a few years back for their euro round, and from photos it looks like the Austrian circuit doesn`t either. Both where spectators look down on he track. Fingers crossed for Lydden keeping its natural look |

Fingers crossed indeed.
Just being pessimistic. Depends what the presence of a fence is for. If its to stop potentially flying debris then what fence is already present is hardly likely to stop much. If it is to act as a barrier to spectators venturing where they shouldn`t then it should be fine. |

Yes, I think this is from an official Ford rallyesport 'How to go rallying' film of the mid-70s introduced by (among others) Stuart Turner and Roger Clark. Have it on DVD somewhere...

0.9 m high, to prevent the spectators entering the track area. This fence should be controlled by marshals during the meetings. 5.2 A second line of protection to prevent a competing car from reaching the public. Not sure the banks at lydden meet rule 5.2 |

Heres the whole regulation
5.2 A second line of protection to prevent a competing car from reaching the public. Protection examples: 1) Spectator control fence. 2) Run-off area, at least 30 m wide, or a difference in levels of at least 2.5 m with - gravel beds - a guardrail, wall or tyre barrier (minimum height 1 m). 5.3 The directions given by the Circuits Commission are to be followed when deciding dimensions for run-off areas and gravel beds. 5.4 The distance between the protective constructions and the spectator fence must be at least 3 m. If the difference in levels between the track and the public is more than 2.5 m, however, and the bank or wall is vertical, no further protection is needed. The spectators must never be at a level lower than the track. |

I'd have thought most if not all of Lydden met 5.2 as it stands? You've got the fence preventing specatators wandering onto the circuit (5.1) and then you've either got banking or tyre wall between all spectator areas and the circuit - the fact that the spectator areas are above track level means that 5.2 is effectively "built in" surely?

we have everything in hand, a small amount of debris fencing will be used but only infront of the grandstands.

Sorry that your answers always lead to more questions, but after debris fencing, the burning question in spectator land, is the "will they, won`t they have to have a Joker lap" question. |

Another question would be,... Is the debris fencing going to be "Brands Hatch Champ Car 2003" style fencing which can be REMOVED after the event, to return the venue to the condition it has always been in??
Even if small areas only are deemed to require fencing, it would be nice if temporary measures were used, so that Lyddens uncluttered look could be returned, for the 363 or so days a year when these extra "safety" measures are not required. Just a thought. |
