Why Didn't McLaren Use The Backup Car?
Why didn't McLaren go to the backup car when they had the starting line failure Sunday? Or did I miss something watching the warmup lap?

A new rule introduced during the week between the two races prevented this being done... I think that was the import of it all...

Was it a new rule - I didn't realise that. I thought it was always that tou had to stick with the car you had when the pit lane closed (15 mins before the start) unless the race was red flagged during the first lap

Perhaps that is right, but I think his exclusion was caused by the new rule, which came into force during last week... anyone can elaborate?

FIA to Introduce New Spare Car Rule in France
Wednesday June 27th, 2001 A new ruling concerning the spare cars will come into play at the upcoming French Grand Prix, the FIA announced on Wednesday. After a meeting held today in Paris, Formula One's governing body, through the World Motor Sport Council, announced the introduction of a new rule saying that "a driver wishing to change cars must have got out of his original car and left the grid before the 15-second signal which immediately precedes the start of the formation lap." The new rule means a driver will not be able to take his spare car if he stalls after the 15-second signal, stopping him from starting from the back of the grid or from the pitlane. The introduction of this new rule received the unanimous approval of all the Formula One teams. |

Does this also include cars that have mechanical failures on the warm up lap? Such as TGF two races ago.

I think so, however I think Ferrari's are not subject to this rule.

No rules apply to any car driven by TGF. If Rubens had stalled in the backup car, he would have been prevented from starting.
However, that rule didn't apply in the race when TGF stalled the backup car. Lucky for him. |

For someone who is way above 25! and thus cannot see the score...well Yeah!...good ole Barryfellow will not race, coz he aint leading the championship
 One rule that does apply to Michael is, "Please look out for 'way-above-25s' who might mistake the Start/Finish for a Zebra crossing"  Get real, Get 2001'ed, please xplain Alesi's burnouts for finishing behind Burti!!!! To the topic tho..I did notice mechanics struggling to get the spare going, even tho Mika was heading home...by foot! Last edited by downforce; 4 Jul 2001 at 11:39. |

what's the point? Makes one think the whole shebang is a conspiracy? After some drivers benefit from changing cars - now we change the rules?? |

Just one moment here folks!
Michael Schumacher was not on a warm up lap when his back up car failed..He was on one of many recon laps he runs to choose between his race car and back up car for the race..All this happened prior to him positioning his car on the grid, which is perfectly within the rules.. Mikka Hakkinen was sitting on the grid, waiting to run the warm up lap prior to the start,when his car stalled.. |
