News Limited Leaving Ownership of the NRL....
Article Here
So... with the money laying around from the NRL, could there be some dollars available for VESA to take on an equity partner (besides the individual teams, and S&EL of course!) There may be some merit in having a news outlet in your corner, while it wont fix the 'other' Sydney newspaper, the increase in column inches to bolster the category would only be of benefit you would have thought.... |

Nothing in the story. Very much doubt they would jump on board, considering some sections of News Ltd are bleeding at the moment.

As a League fan, and a Racing Fan, you don't want this.

News Ltd haven't seen fit to give motor racing much space before, what would they have to gain by buying in?
Also would the team sell some of their 75%, would SEL be willing to give any of their 25% up? |

In fairness the way News Ltd muscled in on rugby league was quite similiar in the way IMG/SEL came to the party in V8 racing eighteen months later

I would have thought the 2 page Saturday spread on rebuilding the Kelly car ahead of Homebush at the weekend was reasonably positive coverage.
But agreed the Tle is rubbish, and the sport needs News Ltd as an investor like it needs a hole in the head. |

In Sydney perhaps but the Herald Sun here in Victoria has a reasonable amount of motorsport on a Tuesday and usually mentions how Webber & Ambrose went plus the Bike GP's and the V8 round if it was on that weekend.

God forbid that any other sport get a mention in the Herald Sun that's more than 1x1 inch in size. |

Once you delve deeper past the 40 pages of AFL you usually find about 3/4 of a page of motorsport (in season).

I'm always continually surprised how much space they give to less popular sports such as basketball, baseball, etc. Basically you need to have 'ball' in the name of sport, or at least be played with the ball. I'm really surprised that Ford and Holden have not pushed their commercial weight behind a push for more motorsport in newspapers. I would have thought that they buy a lot on advertising space in newspapers and should have some influence. Not to mention the combined force of all the other sponsors involved in V8 Supercar/motor racing. |

Basketball and baseball are two good examples you bring up there, as each has well established leagues in the suburbs and talented players are being looked at to go to the USA. But like anyone else cares about the success of Australian talent on the world stage in the State of Victoria, unless it has something to do with that blasted AFL, no one could give damn. Quote:

But then you have Ingall gracing the front page of the news section when the News Ltd sponsored V8 Supercar street race rolls in to town.
That's far from "news", so it all balances out surely? |
