How come I have to log in every time
As of late I have to log in every time I visit 10/10. It tells me when I was there last so I assume that the cockies are working. So why do I have to log in?

I found I had this problem after I did a major cookie clearout a few months ago. Tinkering with the settings page did nothing, and I was resigned to using the little box in the corner every time I wanted to post something.
And use admin functions, which was a real hassle, I can tell you. And then quite by chance I entered the forum through the main front door, and discovered that the site recognised me instantly. I don't know how or why this should happen, as it never used to be necessary, but it has worked successfully every time since. A possible line of approach? |

Also note that there are 2 cookie buttons on your user profile - 1 for cookies, 1 for auto login - make sure they're both checked.
Logout properly from 10-10ths, flush your cookies and your cache and close your browser. Reopen your browser. You should then have to log into 10-10ths the first time you revisit. After that it should take (based on my own experiences) |

Just delete 'em! None of them are of any great significance and if you're a tidy person, you ought to get rid of the dross in your cookies and temporary internet files folders anyway (particularly if you use your credit card online!!).

EvilP; how do I get to the user profile, I just adjusted my profile and did not find any buttons for cookies or auto login. Since I posted the original question I find that this morning the login is automatic. Don't understand this at all. I have just recently installed a fire wall, Zone Alarm, could that have anything to do with it?
I'm with marcus, how do you reset cookies and eliminate temp internet file folders. How do you find the damn things? If you check my profile you will see that I'm not born into the computer generation. |

LOL - you may be a silver surfer Hans, but you're still doing a hell of a lot better than a lot of people who were born into the "computer generation"!
Ok firstly cookies: Once you're logged in, click on the "members" button at the top of the forum. This will bring you into your User Control Panel. On the Control Panel will be a label for "User Options" - if you click on this, that will take you into the "cookie" section! As for resetting cookies/temp files - it depends on the browser. In Internet Explorer, go into the "Tools" Menu and select "Internet Options" This will bring up a window. On the primary tab of the window, the middle section is labelled "Temporary Internet Files" - 2 of the buttons are "delete Cookies" and "delete Files" - press 'em! I don't have Netscape, so if anyone needs similar instructions for that, perhaps some kind NS user would post the details? As for your Firewall Hans, it really depends on what it's set up for. Some firewalls can interfere with certain kinds of cookies if security is set high. You may also find you have problems with the Chat function if you're running a firewall. It's all in the config with these things! Ok, now let's all sing the Cookie song again! |

Its just as easy to flush your cookies and temp internet files "manually", rather than worrying about the internet options route. Just:- (with apols to those who know the basics....)
Double-click My Computer on the Desktop Double-click on your hard drive (usually 'C') Double-click on the Windows folder Double-Click on the Cookies folder - select all files - right click (once) while all selected and choose delete. Just say yes at the confirmation prompt. Close Cookies folder Double-click on Temporary Internet Files folder (still in Windows folder) Again, select all and delete in same way as for cookies. I'm obviously assuming use of Windows here - I can't speak about other operating systems. Oh, and if you've got a relatively small hard disk, don't forget to flush your Temp folder as well (which also resides in the Windows folder). Pretty well anything that has been there for more than a day (assuming you use your PC regularly) can be safely deleted. (And if you haven't done it for a while, you'll be amazed at the junk in there and the space it is taking up!!). |

Thanks to EvilPumpkin for the instructions and the kind words. Also thank you to Aysedasi for his instructions.
With your help I managed to clear this problem up and get the computer working well. Thanks again until next time something screws up. Last edited by Hans.ca; 22 Mar 2002 at 20:09. |
