servia dropped by PWR
According to Autosport PWR has dropped Oriol Servia to become a one car team, due to lack of funding.
Servia is reportedly being looked at by Walker racing |

I found this on www.cart.com:
PWR Championship Racing has confirmed its decision to suspend operations of its No. 17 CART race entry for driver Oriol Servia for the remainder of the 2002 CART season. The decision was based upon difficult economic conditions that have contributed to a shortfall in funding to the team. Servia is the wrong driver to dump, as he had beaten Dixon this season and he should be the one to get the chop. |

I bet Dixon is responsible for most of PWRs sponsorship though. He is certainly the HOT PROPERTY in CART.

I've heard rumour that Walker is buying whatever PWR is selling, and that Servia will still be driving.

aaargh! How can you do it three races into the season?
and I hope what macdaddy says is true... BTW, what was then the "Air Eight" sponsor on Oriol's car? |

"Air Eight" are a subsidiary company of PacWest Communications. Basically, Bruce McCaw still funding the team out of his own pocket....

This is ****en bull****. Servia is too good a driver to let go. He simply must be in this championship. Poor bloke thought he had got a good drive, and then this happens. Back to driving rubbish again - if he gets a drive at all.
Let's just hope he gets a drive with Walker. |

The drive with Walker may be for his IRL team, but this is all speculation as of yet.
The real problem here is that the car count has dropped to 19, and this may put CART in trouble with some promoters if they cannot deliver 20 cars for an event... |

Thats no good
hopefully it will be a second Walker car, because i think Tora deserves the good ride that he has, and we need another car in the series |

As SevenGrain alluded to, many (most) of the contracts with the promoters guarantee that CART will field a minimum 20 cars. Such a "small" thing like a team dropping one of its cars may prove to have a domino effect. Pook's certainly got a full plate, hasn't he? Hopefully Walker buys the operation and Servia teams up with Tora.

Servia at Walker Racing? I would like to see it but... is not Derrick Walker stretching his resources too much, having just bought Reynard America assets? SevenGrain said recently that Derrick Walker has plenty of money, but my impression is so different... (Seven, as you are an insider, please clarify that, I have no elements whatsoever to comment - I just remember that Liz was also surprised with your words).
Twenty cars on the grid was already alarming, less is unfeasible. |

the worst part is that Oriol was reassured of the seat just a few days ago, and this caught him totally by surprise. Autosport said Oriol was asked by his PWR engineer "how are you" by phone and Oriol thought he was asking about Indy...

I don't know if Big Mo has that much more money...
In that same link it says Sigma, Patrick or Herdez would buy the cars and equipment of the 17 car to go to a two car team... |

When I said that Derick Walker has plenty of money, I was referring to his personal wealth. His could (and did) plunk down the bucks to buy Reynard.
What Walker will not do is fund a race team out of his own pocket, racing being a losing investment without a sponsor. That is, to spend 10 or 12 million to win a Championship that pays one million to the winner. Because he will not run his IRL outfit without a sponsor is one of the reasons that he has manages to maintain his personal wealth. |

Sigma could make sense, but if they didn't have the funding to run a second car for Johnny Herbert pre-season, how will they have the funding now?
Be nice to see Pat step up to 2 cars again, but again, where will the money come from. Herdez may have the money, but I thought they were insistant on having Mexicans in the team. As for Walker, I expect the expense of the Reynard US takeover may leave them unable to run a second car In short, I think we may have seen the last of Servia for the season, but I hope I'm wrong. |

Servia (IMO) is one of the most talented drivers on today's grid. Should he lose his ride just a few races into the season would be a shame. And a terrible loss. If only racing was based solely on skill, not on sponsorship and nationalities.

Oriol's just closed his worst week. Out of his CART ride, DNQ at Indy due to fuel pressure problems combined with the rain that shortened the session by 69 minutes.
It's so disappointing |

I really feel for Oriol. As mentioned before, based on talent he should be in one of the very best rides in CART. Let's just hope he picks something up.

I'm quite curious about what happens when the car count drops below twenty. I believe that any promoter can choose to have the race cancelled. And if they do not (which I don't think any would), the sanctioning fee drops a cool $200,000 for every car under 20. But I can't see it in the published rules on CART's website.
