Honda Racing confirms Civic Type-R for 2003 BTCC

Honda (UK) has confirmed today (Thursday) that it will be renewing its attack on the British Touring Car Championship in 2003. After an absence of one year, Honda Racing returned to the UK's premier race series at the start of the 2002 season with a pair of race-prepared Honda Civic Type-Rs and, despite the severe testing restrictions imposed on competing teams, the two Type-Rs were quick to impress. Andy Priaulx scored the Civic's maiden win at Knockhill in August and then team-mate Alan Morrison underlined Honda's increasing prowess by winning the season finale in dominant style at Donington Park in September.

Keen to build on this fast start and also to maximise the many lessons learned during the Civic's debut campaign, Honda will contest the 2003 BTCC with Arena Motorsport, the team responsible for the Type-R's victorious achievements during 2002. Full details regarding next season's driver line-up will be announced at a later date.

"Honda has an enviable racing pedigree both within the UK and internationally and we are thrilled to be announcing our continued commitment to this exciting touring car programme," says Paul Ormond, Head of Press and PR, Honda (UK). "By the end of the 2002 season, the racing version of the Civic Type-R had started to emulate its award-winning showroom counterpart. We are now optimistic that we can build on these early successes and become a serious title contender in 2003."

Well, it does seem to be a day for announcements There's been various people posting doom and gloom prophesies for next year, so nice to see things to be positive about. Honda were looking better and better throughout last season, now lets see what they can do in 2003. Do we reckon they'll keep the same drivers or change?

I would reckon Priaulx and Morrison would be likely candidates for next year, my bet for the 2003 title is actually Priaulx if he returns with Honda!

mg have already confirmed i think this is on the mg website

"With the ink barely dry on the final result sheet of the 2002 British Touring Car Championship season, thoughts are already turning to 2003. Immediately after Sunday's final race MG's Anthony Reid was already thinking of the lessons that could be learnt from Donington Park and applied to the team's planning for next season, as well as complimenting team-mate Warren Hughes on his race performance.

“I had a disappointing finish to the last race of the season, but it was a fantastic result for Warren – unbelievable,” said Anthony. “To come up from 15th to second was an amazing drive.

“We start getting ready for 2003 right now, and we learnt an awful lot this weekend. This is the sort of circuit we need to be competitive on for next year if we are going to be consistent throughout the season and have a shot at the championships. We can take a lot away from here, study the data, and use that to help crystallise our plans for the winter.”"

Yep, Vauxhall will have to watch over their backs with the Civic Type-R getting everything together to challenge for the manufacturers' title.

Interesting to see that Autosport seemed to have picked Rydell's name out of the hat for a Honda drive, and then they also say Andy Priaulx has the chance of a top ETCC drive. I would quite like to see both in Honda's though!
