A man who managed to take himself and his team mate out while weaving to warm the tyres on a parade lap!
Actually, since he stopped to spend a couple of moments talking to me at the FIA GT meet at Silverstone, Frank Sytner has gone up in my estimation. He had just been presented with a trophy and a garland at the time, so I suspect he may have been in a better than average mood. |

Sytner definitely. It wasn't his teammate he took off on the warmup lap. But i do remember him bullying all the BMW Junior drivers in 1990. Telling them not to pass him and other things. Currently Menu is the oaf of the series. Arrogant attitude gets up my nose and almost running me over in his Ford paddock buggy didn't help. Mike Smith is in a different category. Bad Drivers. Colin Blair, Alex Portman, Geoff Steel, and many more.

What about Jonathan Palmer ?
I think JP started the 'ex- Grand Prix drivers make an arse of themselves club' I remember him punting Nettan Lingdren off at the Russell chicane (Snetterton) and gaining some female venom in the gravel trap....... Other more recent memebers - Julian Bailey & our own DW (888) - sorry Derek !! |

Agree with all the suggestions, apart from Leslie - he's definately a fully-fledged arse...
Seriously, I meant to ask, who was the most useless driver in the BTCC - ie who biffed everyone off in every race they ever took part in. I can't believe i'm gonna say this, but Leslie is better than that - he does /try/ to race occasionally... How could I forget Warwick ?! Jeez! Can you imagine a three car Vauxhall team of Del Boy, JC and MULLER!!! Blimey, can you imagine the bodyshop on the Monday morning...?! |

There's just so many!!
Big Frank - still a prat in historics Palmer - oh dear Smith - some great accidents - very lucky not to kill himself.. Watts!!! - off we go again. Or my favourite - Tim Harvey, only saved by the fact that he did actually win a championship. |

That championship was not Tim Harvey's, it belonged to JC!!!!!!!!
Anyway, there are a few that run it close - Synter definately, Kox, Menu and Bintcliffe all are the ones that I would choose. And how could I forget Leslie, "Vodafone Nissan WILL BE FIRST!!" And dammit, they were as well... |

Ok I know this topic is ancient now, but i just found a gem on a pointless web search to back up Frank Sytner as Oaf Of All Time.
Reads as follows : A millionaire car dealer in a Rutland village has been rebuffed in court after attempting to sue a nearby farmer for having sheep that were too muddy. "Mud was inevitable" said Judge Victor Hall as he threw out Frank Sytner's application to Leciester Crown Court for a restraining order against farmer Edward Baines and his untidy flock. While Judge Hall counselled that people living in the countryside had to expect such things, Sytner's wife Elizabeth told thecourt of her own rustic ordeal; "I was in my garden and heard cows making a noise in the field. It was annoying, so I went to see what was happening." When told it was normal for cows to be heard in the countryside, Mrs Sytner replied "Yes, it's unfortunate, isn't it?". Sytner was ordered to pay his own and Mr.Baines legal costs, estimated at #35,000. Now how can you argue with that? |

Finally fatbloke sez something with a touch of truth (or sense): Russell Spence. What an oaf... Although he should be praised, because I do remember that he scared the $"£^ out of Menu when he had his crash at Oulton!!

I have a new candidate for this.
Peter Cate He is even making comments against his team-mate which is really unwise IMHO and could backfire against him. From his website re Silverstone: "I was looking to establish a gap....when Jim (Peter's team mate) lunged down the inside at Copse and hit my front wheel, which pushed me wide and unfortunately bent the steering. I don't know what he was thinking - the move could have eliminated both of us" I'm sorry, but that's just not on Cato. What do the rest of the B&Qsi followers think? |

As I was nowhere near Copse I think I'll wait and see if that actually gets shown on TV at the weekend. (next question is how much proddie coverage can we expect from Silverstone)

All time Oaf...hmm...
Gotta be Nigel Mansell. Drove into a bridge in 1993, blamed Tiff Needell for it when it was purely his own fault, destroyed several Ford Mondeos in 1998...But of course, we can't forget his "amazing" performance at Donington in 98. Of course, the guy is such an oaf he outbraked himself on the last lap and let Derek Warwick through onto the podium when Nigel clearly deserved it...Oh well. There's definetly some more oafs out there but I can't think of any right now. I'm sure I'll remember some later. Oh and Eugene O'Brien too-drove completley off the track @ Thruxton in 1994-when showing the 94 review video to my friend, I happened to show him that and he couldn't stop laughing at how stupid he had to have been to crash like that... Definatly Nigel Mansell at Donington in 1993. Did he not realise it hurts and destroys cars when you crash in concrete bridges.

Derek Warwick.
After F1 and Sportscars deserted him he demmanded he be given a touring car ride because the series needed him. Remind me of one good Warwick BTCC drive. He even had to be part owners to get his Vauxhall ride |
