Heidfeld confirmed in the Williams (merged)
http://www.grandprix.com/ns/ns14182.html
Williams has named Nick Heidfeld as its second driver alongside Mark Webber in 2005. The news was announced this morning in Valencia in Spain. It is not clear when the decision was made by Williams partners Frank Williams and Patrick Head (if indeed it was made before this morning) but it remained a secret to everyone, even the drivers, until the last possible moment. Good choice. |

No championship winning material but a good solid driver as Webber.

The rumour becomes fact. Excellent. I'm pleased for Nick, disapointed for Jungle Boy.
Bring on the first race. |

I can remember when Nick was out with a good drive and then Button lost his case, then stayed at BAR, which opened up the drive for Nick.
Finaly a team worthy of his talents. |

Good choice. He's going to surprise some people this year. The first real test for Webber IMO.

Autosport.com are now covering the story, reporting that Nick's speed and technical feedback were two key factors in the decision.
Other F1 news sites are curiously slow with the news I must admit. www.autosport.com Last edited by Super Tourer; 31 Jan 2005 at 10:51. |

They probably thought the news would come later - during the launch? A lot of journos might be late getting up after all arriving at Valencia last night?

Excellent news. Webber/Heidfeld is a strong (if unproven) combination, and I really wouldn't like to bet on who'll be faster.

Good luck to Nick - should be a good challenge to Mark - probably the biggest he has had since coming into Formula One.

You would. Maybe they only flipped the coin this morning and the email confirming the result is stuck on a server somewhere GrandPrix.com says that it was kept very secret even within Williams.
I hope there wasn't an embargo! Actually I find that the team websites are never a good place to find out news! A lot pick up general news, including items about their own team, from external sources. Heidfeld must be a happy chap at the moment. What chances that he beats his best position to date in his first GP? |

The article says..... "The decision means that Antonio Pizzonia will probably not stay with the team and will now either look for a job at Jordan or go to America".... but i thought both drivers were signed to drive for Williams and it was agreed that one would definitely be the second driver and the other would definitely slot into the testing role?

I think Nick could surprise a lot of people this year somehow. I think he deserves the ride after his performances over the years. Hopefully he'll have a great season and keep Button at BAR.

Yes, but he knows that if he remains there as a tester, is career is finished.

That surprised me too. Maybe they mean after a while rather than immediately? To a certain extent if he hasn't got the job here his future at Williams is probably a dead end.

I would even stick my neck out and say that Mark should be worried.
Out of the two, I would have said Nick was more consistant and in equal cars (assumed) this is the key. Mark will get the better qualifying positions, but I reckon Nick will be more of a points scorer. Cant wait for the lights to go out in approx 4 weeks. |
