Dim newbie question

Hi, I've not done any marshalling but I do race and I think it's about time I did some work on the other side of the armco as well as just putting money into the marshall's fund with my entry fees.

Essentially it seems a good idea to say thanks for all the work you chap[pesse]s do and also to see if we racers seem quite as daft as I suspect we do from your viewpoint.

The thing is, do I have to do some training or can I just sign up somewhere to help out? I'm assuming that there's scope for completely dim newbies who reallly wouldn't want the responsibility of, for example, waving flags about.)

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

I'm a racer too....When I got the urge, I contacted the local bunch via this website and turned up on the day, got lent a set of overalls and got sent out !!

Great bunch of people and learnt a lot from the experience. Must do it again this season !!

Tim,

You will be welcome at any / all meetings you want to do. As you live in Cambridge you are in easy reach of Snet, Silverstone, Cadwell, Mallory, Donnington, Rockingham.....

When you try it once you might well get hooked and want to do it again! Have a look at the list of events at any of the circuits you fancy then let the forum know which meetings you want to attend and someone who is going will sort it out for you.

Hi Tim,

You have now made the biggest mistake of your life, by saying you would like to join us on the bank.

As you are from Cambridge, 750mc have a meeting at Snetterton over Easter if you contact Pete Harding he should be able to help he is their Chef Marshal.

If not PM me and I might be able to help put you in contact with the right person.

Thanks, I'll get in touch with Pete. I was thinking about that meeting as it's one of the 750MC ones that I don't have a race at. Have to get permission from the social sec first though....

Thanks,

Tim

Don't worry about that.

Most of us have to get permission from our Care in the Community Officers!!

Be like me and my social sec? Both come along and find out how Marshals works.

You never know she might like Marshalling then your racing will end

As most training days are held in January/February, you're too late for this season. However, as a driver you do have some knowledge of the way things work - especially if you've crashed a few times yourself!

You'll be partnered with an experienced marshal (or, in goforit500's case, me!) who will 'show you the ropes'. You'll find it an enjoyable experience!

I did wonder that. She actually likes going to race meetings (i guess that makes me quite lucky really ) The thought of standing at a marshals' post may not be ideal though...

Tim,
There are zillions of lovely ways the Hon Sec can help out, without even going near a marshal's post.
This thread proves once again that the only stupid question - see below!

She's welcome to come and join me in the pit lane - there's always plenty to do and if the weather is inclement we get a dry spot!

I'm always happy to see drivers too - operating pit exit lights is a skilled job but drivers can soon pick it up because of their race knowledge.

Trying to piece the evidence together, I summise that as you haven't got a race at 750MC Snet you are probably a 750 racer and, as most of the series that are not at Snet ARE at Mallory, you might be there.
If so you can collar me and I will make the arrangements.
As for S Sec, Snet is always short of Pit/Start marshals as long as you can communicate in Norfolk brogue.

I did it the easy way. Take a look at Tim's profile - under 'Interests' he lists: '750 MC RGB racer'!

OI! you can stop that right now, i happen to have spent the first 18 years of my life in that county!! I have to admit tho, now i live in a civilised part of the country and no longer have so much of an accent, it's interesting speaking to the rest of my family as i have to concentrate really hard just to understand them now....!

If i happen to be visiting and there just *happens* to be a meet on at Snet, i'll more than likely put my name down again like i did last year. 750MC at Snet for my last race of the year was probably the busiest i've been so far, and cracking racing too.

Well, Tim have you got permission from the social sec to come out a play on the bank with us this weekend at Snetterton?
