V8s warn Ten to sign new deal..........
http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0...-23770,00.html
V8s warn Ten to sign new deal March 19, 2005 V8 Supercar racing has launched itself into the AFL television rights battle, warning long-time TV partner Channel 10 to sign a new V8 deal soon or risk losing the sport to another network. Ten's rights to the V8s expire at the end of 2006 - the same time as Australia's most sought-after TV sport AFL. With Ten aggressively chasing AFL for 2007 and beyond in a partnership with Seven, V8 boss Tony Cochrane said his sport would not be waiting to see what happened before negotiating its deal. Ten has been given until the first week of August to exclusively negotiate with the V8s before the rights are offered to other networks. "We are very confident we are big enough and important enough to go ahead," Cochrane said. "We're not hanging back to see what might be the fallout of AFL. "We are a significant player on television in this country. "Television networks rely on live sport to really drive their demographic base, particularly males 19 to 39. "That's a key market for us. I'm sure all three networks know that, and I'm sure Fox Sports know that as well." Ten has held the V8 TV rights since the V8-Super Tourer split in 1997. Figures show V8 Supercar racing is Australia's third most watched television sport behind AFL and cricket. The V8s signed two new international television deals today, with overseas cable TV channels Motors TV and EuroSport set to televise the sport. Meanwhile, Holden is negotiating with General Motors in China to run one of its V8 teams under another GM brand, Buick, for the Shanghai round of the championship in June. A Holden spokesman said talks were underway to re-name one of its teams Team Buick for the race. Buick is GM's brand in China, with Australian-made Holden Statesmans re-badged and sold as Buick Royales there. It is believed Rick Kelly and Garth Tander's HSV Dealer Team is likely to be chosen for the temporary switch. |

Yet another example of Tony Cochrane thinking he's much more important than he actually is.
The AFL deal is worth hundreds of millions of dollars and crucial to the networks' overall fortunes. If Cochrane makes Ten chose he will lose big time. Pull your head in. Let Ten sort out what games it's going to get under any Seven/Ten AFL deal and then get an offer from them. This will be repeat of the last TV negotiations: Cochrane will tell the media that Nine and Seven are seriously interested (which they're not) and eventually they'll re-sign with Ten. |

Ten are only interested in Saturdays anyway. How much they want to spend on V8's depend on how much they have to spend in the 'joint-venture' with 7 in the footy.

I really couldn't care less about the AFL. I just hope we still get good coverage of the V8 Supercars in a reasonable hour and not in the middle of the night as was the case about 10 years ago.

Before he demands an ulimatum, TC needs to check his TV ratings compared to the AFL...Unfortunately for him the ratings companies don't use the same accounting 'techniques' as the V8 crowd counters!

What's the alternative if Ten calls TC's bluff?
Nine? Hoooo boy, TC will have to read up on how Nine treats Rugby League. |

If you think 9 treat Rugby League poorly check out what they do to AFL : Vic do well, SA & Tas are along for the ride, stuff the rest.

Cavvy: as Nine fooked the League to get AFL, I think AFL fans are well off comparably.

I can't see anyone breaking AVESCO door down on this one it will all depend on how the AFL TV rights go. Nine has Rugby and Seven and Ten have put in for AFL as a team. Only one will cover sunday afternoon AFL so the other one will be the likely taker for supercars but as they will be the only bidder where the need for the rush on tens part.

The 2004 update to anti-siphoning legislation has at least guaranteed all the V8 races will remain available to free to air networks. So even if none of the other networks want them the Supercars could end up on SBS like the ashes.
Les Murray and Neil Crompton could be the new voices of V8 Supercars. |

I have heard a whisper about a mega-dollar deal coming from seven for the V8s. It is only a whisper (albeit from a relatively well-placed source), but a whisper nonetheless.

AFL is the prize seven are going for and it looks like they will get it with a channel 10 alliance. Both channel will not show AFL games at the same time so it will still leave 10 in a position to take the Supercars if they want them.

Channel 7 buy the rights to the v8's and then lease them back to channel 10 ??
Channel 7 then run the big events on there network out of the football season (eg. Bathurst , Adelaide) |

best case here would be for channel 9 to somehow win the rights to the footy. That way they have the cricket and the footy. That leaves a big battle for 7 and 10 to get the v8s and ensure the best for our sport.
