I disagree , I thought Pacwest were a great little team and it was a shame to see them fall by the way side.
I dunno the exact reasons (money I believe) but it was a sad loss to CART at the time as was when Sigma also fell over. I have no idea what has happened to any of the founding principals of pacwest (Domonic Dobson was one I think?) |

Mark Blundell was a PacWest stalwart.
In the early days they went through Dominic Dobson, Scott Sharp and Danny Sullivan. Mark and Mauricio were there for a number of years, with Dixon coming in near the end. Roberto Moreno subbed for an injured Blundell a couple of times and Teo Fabi may well have had a one-off race for them. |

Bruce McCaw of Seattle formed PacWest in 1993, with Dominic Dobson as the driver. I don't think money was precisely the reason it folded in mid-2002 -- according to Forbes, Mr McCaw is still the 554th richest person in the world (net worth about $1 billion US). I suspect he decided that the return on investment wasn't what he wanted, and it probably wasn't fun anymore. Mr McCaw is still active in supporting the Northwest Historic Races every July at Pacific Raceways, which raises money for a children's hospital in Seattle.

Bruce McCaw is very wealthy but they were unable to find adequate sponsorship so he folded the team. No matter how much money you have spending 10-15 million per year for a hobby is just too much and he wanted no part of that.I believe Kalkoven bought the equipment as well.
He was a big asset to CART though and it is too bad he is gone. |

I remember in 1997 they were really a team on the up - Blundell won three races, Big Mo' won a race and they were really flying high. But then they decided to keep their old chassis for 1998 and, along with keeping the outclassed Mercedes engine, they never recovered.

Dixon and ServiÃ* were a good team for 2002, it's a shame it didn't happen. PacWest was a stalwart team but losing Motorola and Hollywood was a problem, along with the poor Mercedes performance.

Since last year the McLaren F1 Team have the same problem with the poor Mercedes engines...
@ sgjb: I agree with racerkeke, money isn't (or was) the problem for a billionaire like McCaw, you can pay the teams bill with the compound interest and buy a Lear Jet too... so I believe it's more like something that he lost the "fun" of beeing a teamowner... |

Did they ever have sponsorship that wasnt related to McCaw's business interests?
Motorola, Nextel etc etc were McCaw companies/suppliers/customers... about the only commercial dollars were from Gugelmin's fag packet Hollywood dollars |

Bruce is still a wealthy man, but I think at the time Pacwest closed down he was having a lot of business problems because of the dot com bust and the race team was like the last hassle he needed. I will not be surprised if he makes a return someday.
