Yes and with reliability improving a podium could be tough... in the past 2 years weve seen the rules become harsher on the cars yet reliability has improved dramatically...
I think their pace in terms of other teams will only be known when everyone is testing their 2005 car. |

IMO, I think that they can get close enough for one, maybe two podiums, considering their sometimes excellent performances last season, even in the latter part, which hadn't been seen for some time with Sauber IIRC.
But I think I'll wait until the Aussie GP before making bold predictions again... It can be quite chilly at Spa-Francorchamps right after the season, especially in just a tutu. |

Perhaps the switch to Michelins have given them a little extra performance, similar to BAR last year. I don't think there is any question that their wind tunnel will improve the new car to a greater degree than their previous efforts, so perhaps it's not unreasonable to think that their current performances are a true reflection of the cars improvement with new rubber. In any case, I know that JV is highly motivated, so I am hoping for a car inside the top 8, one that Jacques can realistically challenge with.

Nothing against JV but if he couldn't compete in a Renault what chance does he have in a Sauber

3 races in a Renault after 10 months off, you may add!

I had refrained from any JV-bashing in my earlier post, but I still have a gut feeling that however fast the 2005 Sauber may be, it would be a bit faster with a different driver......

I'm not a great fan of JV, but i'd say give him half a season to show whether he's really up to the challenge.
His stint in F1 has barely impressed me, besides his first season in 1996 and a few solid drives every have a century... but thus far, he seem to have changed and matured a bit and i think his second shot at F1 should deserve a 2nd chance, not immediate condemnation. It's encouraging to see his testing thus far, but testing means little. Hopefully, he can keep the momentum up in the races. Til then, i'd not judge him yet. |

I'm not JV bashing just merely trying to be realistic. I wish him all the best and hope he can prove me wrong, i just doubt it very much.

I have a sneaking feeling we are trampling over old ground again - I don't suppose that wait and see what 2005 brings will suffice...?

How many mistakes did he make in 1997 that resulted in a zero or low points "haul" at a race weekend? Monaco, Canada, France, Germany plus lacklustre showings at Monza etc.... He did however redeem himself at Jerez by taking the fight to Michael so bravely. And some of his pole laps were very good. But anyways, for me, 1996 will always be the year I remember Jacques by. |

Lets just refresh the info in our heads here.
Sauber were running a 2004 spec car. So their testing times really mean nothing! |

Then again, people were hoping Jeff Gordon would crash and get injured to 'even' things out a bit during his most dominant years (like 1998 when he won a staggering 13 races), so I guess it's a common thing to hope that the dominant team runs into misfortune (or in some other way have their winning combination get dismantled - like, as suggested, if Schumi was to retire) rather than hope their own favorite team can step up to the plate and challenge for that top spot on their own merit. Edit: Sorry for the OT. As for Jacques, I dearly hope he produces something in terms of results next year. Testing means little, if anything, though, what matters is how well he lines up on the time-sheets during practice and qualifying come March. Last edited by rustyfan; 8 Dec 2004 at 10:37. |
