What Is So Secret About Ferraris Front Brakes?
Why are Ferraris front brakes hidden from the public with carbon fiber schrouds? When the wheels are removed in the garage they are covered from prying eyes and cameras. Do they have a new super brake that gives them an advantage?

They're most probably a new idea to help control brake temp( a movable insulator perhaps?a swtchable fan?-prob not ),or aerodynamic efficiency( some tech sites have mentioned that the hot being expelled from the brakes in a certain direction, away from other critical areas )Maybe they are using a new type of pad/disc material that is best controlled at a certain temp--there has been talk of williams new brakes needing to be 'preheated' before hard braking, so causing most of the rear end accidents involving them early this year(?)all carbon fibre brakes were like this once.
They're not 'super brakes' though, not noticably better than others anyway. Last edited by RWC; 16 Jul 2001 at 20:06. |

The shrouds have something to do with cooling the brakes. This new design has eliminated the need for large brake ducts. Having smaller brake ducts is by far more aerodynamically efficient, and cleans up the air that has come off the front wing, lowering turbulance, and aiding in the production of downforce.
Williams use a different brand of discs and pads from everyone else, and therefore have different heating and cooling characteristics. |

Good to hear from you Art !!!!
Why don't you change you nick ? I'm far from ac tech expert but I think RWC got the point. A different approach, but nothing marvelous ! |

I have asked to have it changed it's only a matter of time I guess. But it will be Artwinter which is my name as Art has already been taken by someone else. Art Last edited by Artwinter; 17 Jul 2001 at 00:44. |

Rory Byrne
Steve Matchett did a very interesting story about Ferrari's brakes for Speedvision. Here's a link to his published article:
http://www.speedvision.com/pub/artic...1/010530a.html Interestingly, Rory Byrne has been obsessed with brake aerodynamics for quite some time -- back to his Benneton days, where he worked with Matchett. Check out the Speedvision article; it's fascinating. |
