Donington Park Museum
Any one know the opening hours and cost, the official donington park website does not even acknowledge the museums existance.

I recall the first time I looked in there. Magic. There were so many cars crammed into a small space but for me it topped Beaulieau because it was so informal.
I recommend it for any enthusiasts and there are some good pubs nearby too. |

Brilliant place I like to visit when I go to Donington. I like it when it is quiet you can really feel an atmosphere round the cars.
Perhaps however I am very sad though!! Last edited by Off at Paddock; 28 Jan 2005 at 22:13. Reason: Oops missed a letter |

Yeah, it is a fantastic place to go. Being as i am only 16, it is the early cars that really interest me. It is a great place to go if you want to see how the cars have develpoed over time.

Phew glad im not alone in my experiences.
He may be a shrewd businessman (or so my old man tells me) but Mr Wheatcroft loves his sport and that the collection is very close to him. Long may it continue to grow. Many talk of a museum at Silverstone as part of the redevelopment (which I am for) but I do not feel it will have the same feeling. |

Tom Wheatcrofts love of motorsport is never in doubt.
I remember seeing him in a Pit Garage at Donington, sleeves rolled up, white shirt covered in oil, helping fix the engine on a historic car, with the biggest grin on his face ever. He was in his element. |

The funny thing with Donington is, you think you are being ripped off with the entrance fee as no one else is in there ! But !!, there are more F1 cars there, than anywhere else
in the world in one place. Nearly all the recent F1 championship cars are there apart from Farari as you might expect, but of course all the other makes are all Britiish cars in the main. As you go through the place it gets better and better! also there is only a low rope round the cars, and me and my son regularly stepped over to have a look inside the cars with no complaints. I don't recommend that if you go, you all go mad with looking but as long as you are sensible they don't seem to mind. Got to be the best racing museum in Britain !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gadgit. |

It's brilliant! My last visit was on the Saturday evening of the LMES weekend in (I think) 2001. As marshals, my friend and I got in free and were genuinely the only visitors in the whole museum. Scott Atherton, the LMES co-ordinator was holding a reception for the teams in the private room, but no problem... To have the place to yourself for an hour with all that racing history is magic! Thanks Tom, long may it prosper and grow - can't wait to come back again...

Moving Experience
The first time I went to the Donington Collection I too had a tear in my eye. It was shortly after the Roger Williamson Memorial Display had been set up and I was saddened by seeing the cars and photos.
As for the lack of visitors - It was great, you could get to see the cars and take photos without some lame brain wandering into shot! Long may it continue |

I got a good book yesterday about the Donignton Collection, entitled IIRC Classic Cars of the Donington Collection. It was printed in 1974 but in absolutely mint condition - £2. Looks pretty interesting (although obviosuly doesn't include the modern F1 cars at the museum).

Can't remember fully (not at home at the moment), but Doug Nye was one of them I'm positive. Don't underestimate the charity shops when it comes to buying rare or oddball books ;-)

Ive been to the Museum thrice and i still cant get enough of it!! On two of the three visits I was alone with all 180+ machines and 'spooky' driver overalls...every time i oggled at a car for too long I 'heard' the original driver go "...so what dya think?"!!
A truly emotional experience and its sad that the British Govt havent included it in the 'places to go' brochures. |

I finally managed to see the collection twoards the end of last year. It cost me a few quid to fly to england and stay near donnington, and the second I walked through the door after buying my ticket, It was all worth while (and then some). The hour I spent there (mostly on my own , a father and sone came in just before I left) wasone of the best I have ever spent. I am a huge McLaren fan and teh Mclaren display was an emotional experience for me, one of my favorite days ever. I'll be back there again this year and I will probably spend two hours this time.

Haven't been for about ten years - so is it worth going again? Don't know about Marshals getting in free though - didn't work for me last time! |
