Rod Birley - 400?

No he's not quite that old...

But he's heading for that many wins, can he do it however - whats he on now (Rod?) 394 I think?

I'd love to say that I was in a position to make him wait for it, but as I haven't turned a wheel in the new car as yet, it's highly unlikely that I'll be anywhere near shedding the "L plates" for it.

On paper, I ought to be able to give him a good run for his money! But in reality, it'll take me quite a few outings to get to know 'Harry', let alone master it. Plus the Dunflops on the car are far from new, and I'm not going to waste a new set on what is effectively a shake down.

Engine now back in, all holes filled or covered, plumbing worked out, wiring sorted, should be fired up tomorrow (Weds). Would like to test it on Friday, but don't have time.

So, I guess, it's COME ON ROD! resistance in futile....

Rob.

Another example of exciting to watch and quick enough to win races (well, just occasionally!) One of my best memories is Rob at Silverstone in a (?)Cosworth in a handicap race going through a gap that shouldn't have been there.

Go for it, Rob.

Thanks for the nice wishes guys and girls, nothing like a bit of pressure. My usual "mechanic" is somewhere in the Grand Canyon, yes America, with her father (white water rafting, mule trekking etc). I will be relying on a certain legend from up north, namely Tony Sugden and his good lady Rose to help Shawn keep track of things.
By the way, Rob, its Saturday not Sunday. Anyway, its another full grid for Track and Race.

Best of luck going for the 400 (sound like a NASCAR race).

I don't recall saying Sunday! I said I'd be there all Friday night working on the car!!!

Looks like I won't be burning the midnight oil as much as I'd feared. It's all coming together.....

What a nightmare!

No, Prescott this week-end. I'll be checking the results as soon as I'm back though.

Just out of curiosity, how many of your wins have been on the ovals, and how many of your wins are class wins or are they all outright.
Good luck on Saturday.

Thanks guys (and girls). Unfortunately several cars succumbed to mechanical woes and did not make the second race. My first race was at Silverstone on March 17th 1973 with a Hillman Imp. No outright wins with that car but I did win a championship. Race wins came with a Ford Capri. Lots of wins on ovals, particularly at Brafield (Northampton) and Lydden, also Arena Essex, Wisbech, Skegness, Newton Abbot, Iwade. I often used to do three meetings a week, with three races at each.
My current Ford Escort WRC is the most successful car I have owned.

We only included class wins where races were merged (like Track and Race with southern sports and saloons) or at big events like Nurburgring (where there are usually over 40 cars in our class and over 200 in the race!!). Some of my hot rod races were not on pure ovals (a couple of times we raced on the Brands Indy circuit and quite often on the Lydden 3/4 circuit...which didn't go all the way up Hairy Hill).
