Laid up Insurance
Apart from Competition Car Insurance, are there any others out there doing it? I'm having a hell of a time trying to find someone.
It's for a racecar garaged 1 mile from my home. It's not going to be used on the road at all so is strictly fire and theft cover. I've been quoted £450 on a 22k value. Is that reasonable in your experience? Seemed a bit steep to me. Recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks. Scott |

I use David Auden and pay about £50 for £5,500 value. That makes your quote seem a bit high?

Thanks for that Mike. I'll give them a call tomorrow. I was expecting it to be about £250 which is closer to the figure you pay. We shall see.

David Auden couldn't do laid up cover but gave me the details of a company called Moris. Filled in the online quote and 5 mins later I get my quote. £247.00 for 22k cover, and 1k cover for my trailer. £250 excess. I was more than happy with that so paid on line and now its covered. Its quite a good system as you can manipulate the excess and any equipment cover you want, hit the button and it adjusts the quote instantly. Thanks for the help. |

I think they said they were working on being able to offer it. I asked them what they did do and they said something about providing cover for race cars that drive to and from 750MC type events???

And for those of us further down the food chain:
Car = £6000 Trailer = £2400 Spares = £1200 The moris premium was £110 (today). I think this is their minimum premium. I have settled for keeping my fingers crossed most of the time I've been involved in motorsport but investing in a rather more expensive trailer finally swung it for me. It has both hitchlock and wheeel clamp but I have to park it on the driveway. Security devices are all very well but few will withstand a PLANNED attack for more than a few minutes. Always seems to me the fewer the people who know what you have and where you keep it the better. |

Hitchlocks
When I queried the insurer's requirement for a wheelclamp as I already had a double hitchlock,I was told the thieving bas****ds onbolt the hitch complete with all locks and replace it with their own hitch.
Thus the increase in trailer wheelclamps. Lister |

My insurance company only wanted one form of lock and weren't bothered what bit was locked. I have a wheel clamp and a hitch lock but I suppose round here they would just use a Hiab and lift the trailer away when it is not hidden in my woods.

Hidden in the woods with a guard camel?
I might try the old camouflage and foliage trick with my trailer. Has anyone just removed the wheels from there trailer or do the scallies turn up with their own? With a Hiab it wouldn't matter I know. |

Insurance cover
A word of caution to anyone insuring their car and tools. Make sure you have adequately cover in place especially for you tools and spares. The car and trailer are fairly easy to value but I was caught out by the tools and spares value because they had been built up over a period of time. When my garage was broken into a few weeks ago and the theiving burberry wearing b@stards drove off with a load of my stuff I found out I was woefully undersured.
Insurance companies being what they are originally said they would only pay out for 33% of the claim using the "average clause" to justify this, despite that being lower than the insured amounts. Thanks to the brokers hard work (www.moris.co.uk) they raised their offer to slightly above what I was actually insured for (but not nearly covering the total loss). I would highly recommend Moris insurance but make sure you are fully covered! |
