I dunno why, but I always thought they had specialty chassis.
Different undertrays, different wheelbases. Road/street, short oval and superspeedway. And I always thought they would have a stable of chassis at the homebase, similar to what NASCAR has nowadays. |

No I think it was basically the wings and engines that changes. The chassis were essentially the same. That's what made Champ Car unique - they had universal cars.

I'm pretty sure you can adjust the wheelbase (at least on the Lolas) and an undertray is easily exchangable, so it's possible/likely that parts were swapped and changed. But I don't know anything for sure.

I am not sure if the wheelbases were changed. If you did you'd probably have to use spacers to lengthen the chassis?
I guess wings, undertray, radiator openings, brake ducts and winglets were the changed for the oval races. |

The only reason I believe the wheelbase can be adjusted is because when Walker bought his Lolas from Rahal, and was given the setup book (maybe?), he regarded it as a huge help because (I can't remember the exact quote) "there are four different wheelbase settings, and each would require a completely different setup at a track, and the amount of research and testing to figure out what is optimal would be a major stumbling block."
Unless I'm crazy. But I remember this being posted here... somewhere. I'd look for it but that would probably take me days. |

Well, I'll freely admit that I was likely mistaken. That certainly wouldn't be the first time! But I still seem to remember teams of yesteryear saying things like, "The car we're bringing to Phoenix is the same one that won at Milwaukee". I really thought that they had longer-wheelbase cars for superspeedways, ect.
That'll teach me for thinking! Not always my strongest subject! |

Now you got me doubting. I thought that, despite being different cars, all the Lolas (or Reynards or whatever) had the same dimensions, wheelbases, etc...
