Yoong Montoya should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
How many times has a title been won without the best bike?

I'm not sure, but I would say that Gregorio Lavilla's BSB title this year would fit this category. And maybe Colin Edward's 2002 WSB title - I know his bike was great in the last 3 rounds but up until then the Ducati was the bike to have.

2002 as mentioned.
Of course the 2000 Suzuki wasn't very good.
Quite possibly Scott Russel's Kawasaki in 1993?

I dont agre with any of these apart from Scotty Russell. Lavillas bike was very good by end of year, you only have to lok at Haslams results to see that. And as for Edwards, even though Troy was quicker early on he threw it away at Assen and Edwards bike was far quicker after he got the 8H parts on it from HRC.
I would say Rainey's last title was one, Spencers second on the Honda, Lawson on the Honda. Alzamora on the 125 Honda, that bike was so slow!
In superbikes I reckon most of the time the quickest bike wins. Russell was quick but Foggy was quicker really, he threw it away at Sugo in 93.
Harada in the 250's on the Yam maybe against Loris and Romboni in 92?
Maybe even Max on the Honda in 97.
Best example recently though is Kenny on the RGV, one of the best title wins in recent times if you ask me.

Alzamora and Melandri were both on the Honda .. so i wouldn't say it was worse than Marco's

But Marco was on the Playlife bike which was the team mate of Azuma, and Azuma was the main man for Honda at the time. Emilio was not favoured back then and won the title on a real slow bike, the next year with the no 1 plate he was always the slowest of the leading guys through the traps but still roe the wheels off the thing.
The Playlife team back then was the main HRC backed team. If you rememebr Benetton spnsored the Ukawa bike, and were involved with the main 500 team

Yep, I too can still remember that Emilio's bike was considerably slower than Melandri and Azuma in '99-'00.
Quite farçical in 2000 when he was champ IMO...

From memory Alzamura didn't win a race on his way to the championship, can anyone confirm this?

He was Lorenzo's team mate in 03 I think, and then lost the Chuppa Chups lolly sponsrship to Jorge, imagine he might be still riding but he was hopeless on a 250 from memory.
He has a couple of chances on a works bike and never really did anything except when the weather was bad or there were freak happeneings like Assen when Jezza won.
Anotehr one I would add to the list was Andrew Pitt on the ZX6 in Supersport, he didnt win a race either and was clearly on a slower bike, but worked away and got his championship.
