RIP Andy Caldecott

My condolances to the family and associates of Andy Caldecott who was tragically killed yesterday in the Paris Dakar rally.

He was one of the best off road racers Australia has produced and will be sadly missed.

He was a hero in his home state, particually in his home town of Keith (south east of Adelaide). We we able to follow how he was going overseas and cheer him on.

http://foxsports.news.com.au/story/0...-23210,00.html

John Ross, chairman of Tatiara Council which covers Caldecott's home town of Keith, south-east of Adelaide, said he remained a person everyone liked and a great role model.

"He was very easygoing, very humble and always ready to go out of his way to help anybody," said Ross.

"Andy has certainly become one of Tatiara's favourite sons, he was almost an idol in Keith."

from one South Australian to another...RIP ANDY

Was it last year that he finished 6th overall on Dakar?

6th is an amazing achievement! Super talent. RIP

Terrible news, all the Dakar riders are brave, and it's sad when this happens.

I have always been a fan of the Dakar but each year seems to bring another tragedy.

R.I.P. Andy.

RIP Andy.
This must be one of the hardest events of all in the world to compete in, let alone on a motorbike.I watch the updates on SBS when I can, and the vision of guys racing flatout thru sand dunes in the middle of the desert etc amazing.
I'm sure with GPS navigating isn't as hard as it looks , but many still seem to get lost. The sheer length of the stages each day is incredible, and the toll on your body, mind, etc must be hard to deal when combined with the lack of a good nights rest day after day. When you compare this event to other forms of motorsport, IMO these guys rank right up there with the best.
My thought go to Andy's family, my wife said she is pregnant at the moment, and they already have a 3 year old.Tragic news.
