Dywa and Surtees Aurora F1 cars
Does anyone remember the Dywa? - This was an obscure F1 design, which as far as I know was only entered for the 1980 Monza round of the Aurora British F1 series. It is listed as a non-starter (driven by Piercarlo Ghinzani), but I can find virtually no other information about it. It was designed by one Dydo Monguzzi, (who had produced an 'F1' car in 1974 which was equally successful!) and was apparently scheduled to appear at the Belgian GP to be driven by Alberto Columbo, but I wasn't aware of this at the time. Did it race or run anywhere else, and does it still exist?
Secondly, what became of the Surtees TS20+, which Gordon Smiley memorably won the final race of the 1979 Aurora series? Seemed a shame that Surtees fell away from Grands Prix before this car was developed properly. |

The Dywa transmogrified into the Monte Carlo F3000 car, which was almost as successful as it was in F1 guise...

A Surtees TS 20 is raced by Terry Sayles in the TGP championship.

The Dywa was originally built in 75 I think as an F5000 car. It was entered in early 76 G8 races in the UK, but never showed.
The TS20+ was sold late 79/early 80 to Ray Mallock to use in the 80 Aurora series. He raced it 3-4 times, then wrote it off in a 'big 'un' at Thruxton in May 80. |

Vaguely remember the Montecarlo F3000; Fulvio Ballabio's handywork wasn't it? Whatever happened to him after he failed to get his superlicence?

He built the Monte Carlo out of the Dywa! His Father died of a heart attack on hearing the news in early 84 that his son wouldnt get a superlicence. Theres a thread on the Dywa on Atlas, I'l dig the link out for you. He also built that Mig le mans car in the mid 90s... |

Nice one! - that thread just about clears up the whole story, other than where the car is now.
To sum up then ... after scaring Ghinzani witless at Monza, the car was butchered into an F3000 spec but damaged en route to the '85 Silverstone race. Then the remains were bought by Ballabio, who renamed it and failed to qualify it as the Monte Carlo. After that, who knows? Ghinzani can count himself lucky to have rescued his career after that disaster then... |
