Clutch friction plate splines
I'm trying to source a clutch friction plate to fit my engine which is compatible with the Dyno which I have access to . . .its American with a 1 3/8" OD 10 spline shaft. Ideally the friction plate will be about 180-210mm outside diameter . . . .
I'm hoping someones going to say theyre £5 each off the shelf ! |

I probably have a chevy one lying around somewhere, I use the fine spline in one car and the coarse in the other, the Super T10 has the coarse spine and that box was also used in the Mustang.
Opps did not see the diameter bit, could you turn a bigger one down maybe. I do have a multiplate clutch with organic plates but I would need it returned they are about that diameter from memory. Last edited by Al Weyman; 18 May 2006 at 21:03. |

Al, Its seems to be a fairly popular meaty size for big Chevys and a load of Yank engines, the smallest plate is about 10" and we're all using 7 1/4 - 8 1/2" plates so we're looking at making adaptors. the Dyno will take 800 BHP but most of us are never likely to make more than 200 . . . we're just looking at ways of making the transition as simple and cost effective as possible, which seems to be having a friction plate to match the engine and Dyno, hence a 200mm plate with 1 3/* 10 spline.
What I'm now thinking is finding a dead friction plate with the centre boss and rebuilding it into a Ford friction plate, its never get used used, it'll always be clamped shut so it should work as long as I can get it between the clutch cover and flywheel |

I am sure I will have something in fact I am almost certain I do, the small size as well. I bought an old camaro for breaking with a completly rebuilt 305 in it with a new clutch as well and I am sure the old friction plate was in the car also I have others I have accumulated, I will have a look over the weekend but as I say I'm sure I will have something.
PS (Tell Dennis it will be down the famous shed!). Oh it will be free as well. |

Al, it'd be great if only for a pattern, or, I'm thinking I can graft the centre onto a Twincam clutch plate. I'll PM you, thanks

could be worth a call to Helix, they made a specific clutch for my car and was on my doorstep within 2 days of the order being placed, and I dont think they charged me too much either, http://www.helix-autosport.com/

Don't know if you got this sorted, but Small Block Chevy gearbox splines are the same as Jaguar splines - except that the Jag friction plate is smaller. I have an early E-type box mated to a SBC. Used a Jag plate until it broke and moved to Chevy plate after that.

I have the plate, thanks to Al, I'll be drilling the rivets out and we're thinking of making a bronze friction plate, or possibly aluminium and rivetting it back to the centre, its only to transfer drive, load will beintroduced gradually and its never going to get involved in actuation. I don't think its ever likely to suffer any more than 200 bhp and 200lb/ft of torque.

I probably have I had one completely spun at the Siverstone meet (Walter Hayes) we diid and put it somehere but con't find it for the moment. I have two cars with the course spine and one with the fine all the same boxes though so it gets confusing!
