I can't see (or believe) that anyone has mentioned the Aston Martin AMR1.
Now that was an amazing sounding race car! |

The reason the V8 used in FIA-GT sounded different to the Le Mans engine was because it was a flat-plane crank V8, which is very much like having two four cylinder engines driven off a common crank. The Le Mans engine was cross-plane crank, which uses a completely different firing order and results in the characteristic US-style V8 'burble'. |

1999 Mercedes CLK-LM and the 1998 Panoz GTR. Saw them both at LM, beautiful sound of a V-8.

So many cars, so many top sounds.
Nothing really to add other than i'm totally with newbob and we've shared the same views about the Lambo in threads before. That engine note is unrivalled by anything i've ever heard (god I wish some miracle could happen to make it go as well as it sounds.) McLaren GT-R also superb Jag XJR 5-12 V12's legendary Never heard the Matra apart from one time in an historic race at Silverstone in about 1993/4 and it wasn't exactly stretched but as i've heard the same engine in the back of a Ligier F1 (albeit on film) then it's definitely a contender!! And agreed re the Sauber-Merc's, very potent noise that ooozed superiority! |

Similarly, the V12 CLK-GTR's were nothing like the old Jag V12's, just a quiet woosh. Last edited by JAG; 11 Aug 2006 at 21:16. |

I think the time there were seven McLarens (at least it seemd like seven!) at Silverstone has permanently damaged my hearing, that and the original Panoz. In the course of a 4 hour race, inevetably (?? I'm not a mathematician) they all came around together at least once

Biggest ground shaker (outside of a Top Fuel Dragster) for me was the Porsche 917/30. Panzer tank transmission mated to 1000+ bhp.
I cannot comprehend what it was like to drive. |

the porsche 911 GT3 RSR's sounded nice as well although i could hear those cars for the next 2 weeks everywere i went even when i went to bed at night boy they sounded nice but a bit common lol.
i guess i did fail to mention the lamborghini murcielago RGT it sounds like no other lemans car ever seen or raced it does sound very very nice i wish i could see it racing especially the B racing lambo and a special mention to the works zytek and jota zytek the backfiring from that car was something awesome it was like a helicopter gunship attack on a fireworks factory evrytime that car would brake and those flames at night the thing spat huge blue and white flames out like a machine gun at night while the AER turbo cars flames looked like yellow candy floss all nice and fluffy somehow lol |

It's an unusual one, and maybe it's 'cause it was the first really different sound I heard at my first trek to the 24 Hours of Daytona, 1975. The visual (boxy dang vehicles) prolly didn't hurt, either. 'Noticed during the night whilst laying in our tent (down by the west hairpin) that when the drivers were on it, we could tell where they were on the circuit...unlike any other make.
Later they were in M1s and an occasional prototype (got it yet?) But the BMW straight sixes seemed to sound the sweetest in the CSLs. Last edited by jimclark; 14 Aug 2006 at 03:05. |

While seaching I came across the fact that the sound of the Porsche 917 was used for Robin's motorbike in the film Batman & Robin.

I bet lots of people are voting for their favourite marques.
I was a huge Jag fan in the Group C days, but, although the V12s sounded good, they don't stick in the mind the way the Mazda rotary does! The Marcos LM600s were awesome, too, but the car I remember most was the earlier LM500 model which I saw race at Oulton Park in 1994 (I think) - As the cars drove around the track on their out lap, they set off car alarms - You could see them coming by watching the flashing hazard lights on cars parked near the track! Cheers. |
