Champ Car Television to be on ABC/ESPN for 2007/2008
INDIANAPOLIS (November 16, 2006) – The Champ Car World Series today announced the formation of a new television partnership that will see the events of the Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford carried on ABC/ESPN beginning in 2007.
The multi-year agreement will cover the Champ Car World Series as well as the Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda and includes Spanish-language broadcast rights as well. ABC/ESPN will begin its partnership with Champ Car and Atlantic events in 2007, and will be become the exclusive broadcast partner for both series beginning in 2008. “Champ Car is moving into a bright new era in 2007 with four new venues and a newly-developed car for the series, and this new television agreement gives us even more reason to be optimistic about the future,” said Champ Car President Steve Johnson. “This agreement allows us to bring the excitement of Champ Car racing to a greater number of fans while providing a stronger delivery platform for our sponsors and corporate partners.” ABC/ESPN partnered with the Champ Car World Series as far back as 1983 and was a mainstay of the series through the 2001 season. Many of the great moments in the history of the series were seen live on ABC/ESPN including Alex Zanardi’s 1997 win in Cleveland where he introduced the world to victory doughnuts and Mario Andretti’s final Champ Car win at Phoenix in 1993. “Having the Champ Car World Series back on ESPN, ESPN2 and ABC is a tremendous addition,” said John Wildhack, senior vice president of programming and acquisitions for ESPN. “This series produces close, competitive and exciting racing and adds more strength to the lineup of world-class motorsports and automotive programming we are offering our viewers, particularly on ESPN2 as it becomes the destination for motorsports fans.” As part of the deal, Champ Car and ABC/ESPN will also pursue strategies to exploit digital media applications as they pertain to the Champ Car World Series, including internet and wireless media opportunities. “We have been very happy with the treatment that the series has gotten from our television partners, but the opportunity to reach a long-term agreement with one network was attractive to us,” said series co-owner Kevin Kalkhoven. “There are a great number of reasons to be excited about the future of Champ Car racing and this television package will make the series even more enticing to teams, drivers and sponsors.” The full, detailed schedule of events with television networks and air times for both the Champ Car World Series and the Champ Car Atlantic Championship will be released in the near future. The 2007 Champ Car season begins with the Grand Prix of Las Vegas April 6-8. The first of 11 Champ Car events to be broadcast on ABC/ESPN will come with the April 20-22 Grand Prix of Houston. |

While I guess this is good for Champ Car it's bad for me. I can only assume TSN in Canada will start showing CC again. IMO they have a pretty **** poor record. CC at midnight and 2 in the morning sucks. Interesting to see that KK seems to have written off unification as well. Too bad. |

I remember a quote from an ABC exec several years ago when they decided to drop CC and cover the IRL.

Probably a stupid question, but will the ABC/ESPN coverage be live?

Not really...a very valid question, actually
Also, is it a time-buy ? If it is, the last couple laps get cut off when the clock expires. Remember how bad it was in the past ? Speed was the best after all is said-and-done. |

My solution to any open-wheel merger went like this: ABC/ESPN, losing PGA Tour coverage in 2007 and thus leaving a gaping hole in their weekend sports programming year-round, approach both Tony George and Kevin Kalkhoven with an ultimatum. NASCAR is coming in next year; a long-term deal with the NHRA is already in place. ABC/ESPN is prepared to dedicate their Sunday schedule with unprecedented network motorsports coverage. If TG and KK agree to work towards unification by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway's centennial in 2009, they're in, and the network will give them as equal footing in promotion with NASCAR as it can allow. If both sides insist on remaining separate, Champ Car will continue to receive no coverage on SportsCenter (unless someone is killed or maimed, of course), and IMS can consider it's five-decade relationship with ABC toast.
Upon hearing this announcement, I can't help but think that someone in ESPN's front office had the same idea that I had. |

Speed was so Nascar oriented that there was not much visibility left for the "others". I applaud this move which is a multi-year deal. Now we will be able to compare numbers a bit better. How good a deal will depend at the number of venues covered and also at what times they are shown. Thanks KK!

And ABC/ESPN will not be "NASCAR-oriented" with their buy-in for the second half of the Nextel Cup season?

Indycool, just take a look at the Speed web-site and look at the links. You will find Nascar has a full sections for their news while the "others" are in the Auto Racing Section. Meanwhile every type of racing type has a seperate section on ABC/ESPN which is not the case in SPEED. The only real loser in this whole deal will most probably be Ryan Miller on the Speed Chanal. You can disagree all you want. I've been here long enough to be able to state my opinion. Maybe you are unhappy Champ Car will get better ratings and reach more households this year? Just teasing you...

Let's not try to spin this into some kind of merger thing.

Mexico City ratings on SPEED: 0.1 rating/0 share, 54,000 households. That's the smallest household figure since 67,000 at Long Beach in '04. Six CC races, including the last five, had 0.1 ratings. The new deal almost must be better.

All the pieces have gradually been put into place over the past 3 years. When I watched Mexico City I felt like the series was back to the good old days with a variety of competitive teams and drivers and new commercial sponsors coming on board. We've got a new car for next year which is quite nice and it's easier and cheaper for the teams to run. We have a nice schedule of races in good markets. And now best of all we are on broadcast TV back with our old partner. This is only going to help teams is their quest for more commercial backing.

Nothing yet has shown what and how many races will be shown on each. 'Spect that won't be known until the situations around Zhuhai and Denver and the European Tour get resolved schedule-wise.
