Will John Barnes fit into a racing car?
Flicking through teletext this morning I came across a rather strange story, one that DSC eluded to earlier this week and will expand on soon I believe.
Former England footballers Les Ferdinand, John Barnes and Luther Blisset have set up a team with a view to racing at Le Mans in 2008. The team are called Windrush Motorsport and aim to be the first team of Caribbean origin to compete at Le Mans. A little Googling discovers a website: http://www.windrushmotorsport.com/home.htm According the the site the team will compete in the BMW Championships and the EERC series(Britcar) including the Silverstone 24hrs in a BMW M3 E36 built by Racing Technologies. They will also compete in selected rounds of the British GT championship although it doesn't stae in what car. Next year will include a full assault on the British GT championship aswell as Le Mans apparently, again no cars mentioned. |

Just to let you know Windrush intend to compete in the BMW championship this season and a number of other events leading up to the 2008 Le Mans.
They are unable to let you know which cars they will be using for GT racing at the moment but they are in talks with a number of suppliers. They had a test / evaluation day on 29th Jan at Brands Hatch and will be announcing the current driver line-up very soon. Yep, there is supposed to be an article in tomorrows Daily Mirror. |

The colour is foul and there appears to be no stereo - so that shatters my hope of hearing reggae music as the car passes!
Seriously though - this still shows (if they make it) that gentlemen drivers can still enter LM. Gives me hope for the future, all I need now is a footballer's salary! |

On further review - will Les & John et al be able to enter? - do they not need "super" licences?

Sounds like an interesting project. Having the ex-footballers in the car will definitely get them some mainstream press.
Does anyone know much about the other potential drivers listed on the website? |

Just got the low down on this - one of my old running mates is behind it - you will remember that I was part of the first all black racing team in history 2 africans and 1 west indian. The plan is hugely ambitious but has a small chance of coming off - if they did LM it would be in GT2.

Can't remeber which
But either John Barnes or Luther Blissett had a Vauxhall Droop Snoot Firenza in the early/mid 1980s and visited Gerry Marshall at his Tring garage to get an autograph.
I won't say how the story was repeated, as modern times are differant now but whichever one it was was a huge fan and I'm sure either would very easily "fit" into a racing car. |
