They were indeed fairly well placed at the commencement of the run across Australia, but not leading. They were equal with Cowan at Lake King, then dropped another point in the next section, while Clark's Lotus Cortina was well ahead, Staepalaere's Taunus next, Aaltonen was just ahead of Murray after losing time in the first day out of Perth and Bianchi was within closing distance of Clark. Firth's Falcon was in front of the 1800 at Perth as well, but dropped just behind them to Lake King.
