Yes Roger Dorchy on the WM made 405 km/h around 03h00, in 1988 (the engine was a V6 Peugeot 3 litres 2 turbos).
Jean-Louis Schlesser topped 400km/h during the practice in 1989 with his Sauber Mercedes C9 (V8 5l 2 turbos). |

There is nothing wrong with being environmentally aware. Just look at Taiwan. I'm glad that I don't have to wear a mask to walk through town. Besides. We have the technology today to have performance plus greeness. In fact. The electronic controls that OEMs were forced to resort to have made for the best performing engines of all times. And with bio-fuels finally coming into use this will only improve things. An engine running on bio-ethanol will make more power than the same engine powered by gasoline while being far cleaner. The energy density is lower, but bio-butanol will fix that. The diesel engine was originally designed to run on vegetable oil. It's odd how much race fans fear this. It will not kill the show. The noise restrictions are a different story. The smells are nice too. I'll admit to loving the smell of race gas. But I'm willing to give it up. There is a far bigger picture here, and racing makes up about a single pixel or brushstroke of it in the long run.

For the record. I'm all for a formula 0. I've always wished that Can-Am or something similar was around. Cost be damned. Besides. Conisdering that the Porsche 917-30 was making 1500 HP in qualifying trim in '72, and that in
F1 a 1.5 liter production based block Brabham BMW was making over 1300 HP (the dyno topped out at 1300) in qualifying trim in '83-84. I would imagine that with current technology teams would have a harder time finding someone to drive the things, than trying to afford them. It would be wild for a season though. |
