Snetterton Libre 70's
As an avid follower of Snettertons racing history i recall severall Libre races in the 70's, some of which were part of the B.O.C Libre championship.
Do you remember Graham Eden ,Rod Pickering , Steve Thompson who went to race F5000, Bob Ellice, Canadian Jack Smiths Brabham, and deep sea diver hence Mermaid Racing entry of Fred Saunders Crossle. I am sure Andrew Kitson a fellow Snett follower will remember some others ,oh yes my local man John Jordan and his GT40 and later McLaren M6?. Ian Tee Ginetta G16 brm, which on one occassion started with a 10 sec penalty for not practicing, and came through the field to win beating Jordan's GT40. Keep recalling more, Martin Denley Gropa CMC a quick regular but prone to mechanical failures. Pete |

I didn't get to Snetterton until the late 70's, but most of these guys appeared at Silverstone at one time or another.
I had a lot of time for John Jordan (see Driver Files) and his attitude to racing, flying and life in general. These were much more carefree days where big banger race cars mixed with all types of machinery, some good, some bad. A very enjoyable period. I did a few Libre races in the 80's. Chucked some slicks on my trusty Formula Ford and off I went. I had absolutely no chance of coming anywhere near the front but it was purely for the fun of it. And it also gives me an excuse to show this pic again Last edited by Alan Raine; 28 Apr 2007 at 14:21. |

There were a lot of libre races there in 1970 - I make it nine - but less over the following years. Ian Ashley, Paul Craven, Jim Crawford, Graham Eden, Geoff Friswell, Jim Kelly, Ian Mawby, Chris Oates, Rod Pickering, Rob Taylor, Steve Thompson, Martin Watson, Nick Wattiez, Martin Webb and Peter Williams were among the early 1970s winners in F5000s, F2s or Atlantics.

Of course Martin Watson a Snetterton evergreen , FF1600 through to Atlantic i think normally with an Alexis.
And Peter Evans Mallock U2, & 2 guys who shared a clubmans called an RLR PI, green Mallock type car. I recall Adrian Wilkins in an F2 taking on the Jordan GT40 in the wet and nearly winning lacked the power on the s/f line. And a certain Gerry Marshall in a Lotus 61 dispite having to cut away the sides to get his arms in. Even with the weight disadvantage he still was top 6 material. Pete |
