Indy Rookie Orientation Program
Can anyone explain why Michael Andretti took part in the Indy rookie orientation program? I assume he saw the advantage of some 'refresher' laps but yet Al Unser Jr (equally semi-retired) didn't? Obviously it's compulsory for rookies to take the test but surely this isn't also the case for experienced but 'track rusty' legends?! Or was it a contractual thing that stopped Little Al? Any details gratefully received!

As far as I know, there was nothing in the rules to stop Unser - Non rookies have an option to do refresher laps, but for whatever reason ($$$?) he/the team chose not to.

He didn't have to take the test, but he should have...It was two days of extra track time that he could have used to get up to speed and to get a feel for the car...Michael A. said that it benefited him greatly so that he could get back into the swing of speed and could build some momentum for last weekend
Now Little Al is still on the outside looking in and will have to qualify again Saturday instead of focusing strictly on race set-ups, scuffing tire sets, getting full tank runs, etc. |
