Awful news.
A wonderful skilled showman, a crowd-pleaser. I met him briefly at the motor show in 2000, shook his hand, a great man. My thoughts go out to those affected by this tragic accident. |

Colin McCrae dead?
Apparently Colin and his 5 yo son may have been killed in a Chopper accident. Awaiting formal ID.

I can honestly say I was stunned into silence when I just read the latest news.
I saw the news article earlier about 'a' helicopter crash, which is always bad enough, then later saw it said "near Colin McRae's property" , then just now the horrible realisation. I'm hoping , as I'm sure we all are, that there will be some miracle and he wasn't on the helicopter (not that anyone else 'deserves' this) my condolences to those affected by this tragedy, |

Wasn't there a big story quite a few years ago about Colin wanting to drive at Bathurst? What happened with that?

888 Fan, you are quite right. Colin would have been a real star attraction for the endurance races, and at 39, he still had a lot of time on his side.
I have no idea what happened, but at times, the WRC schedule used to intervene, and make it all a bit awkward. Colin was a very genuine, and sincere person, who always struck me - in my few brushes of contact with him during Rally NZ events - as not having the ego of most of the modern drivers. He was more the enthusiast type, who just happened to be paid to drive. I'm lead to believe that Alastair has now settled, or at least has a base, in Australia too, which would surely have given the Bathurst attempt more legs. I will remember him fondly as a person and a driver, particularly with Grist calling the shots. With two such thick accents, it was amazing that they could understand each other. Rest in peace, Colin. You impressed with your rally style. Maybe you will join Possum, Roj, and Richard in the Heaven Works Team. |

Can we please not jump to conclusions just yet? Anyone dying is sad, but it might not be Colin. His own website is completely blank right now tho... |

It's scary how many drivers and riders are killed in helicopter and plane accidents.
It is a sad loss, I was only reading about his appearance at the X-Games a few weeks ago and there was still an outside chance of him getting a drive in WRC next year. |

It has now been confirmed that Colin was in the helicopter, along with his son, and two family Friends.
There is a thread in the Tributes forum if you would like to leave a message of condolence. http://tentenths.com/forum/showthread.php?t=100201 . Last edited by silver bullet; 16 Sep 2007 at 18:52. |
