Anyone have any experience of the Glebe T5 transmission as used in racing TVR's?
We came across a very reasonably priced 2nd hand but unused Glebe (Borg-Warner) T5, heavy duty, close ratio, dogleg gearbox which is rated to 500bhp and 465 lb/ft torque. It was developed for used in racing TVR's and is way overkill in terms of handling the power we will be putting thru it. (only 293 bhp & 230lb/ft torque) Its a bargain price for spec compared to similar power rated transmissions but we'd just like to be sure that it deserves its reportedly good reputation. It is to be used in a Grp4 Escort rallycar.
See further down the page at http://www.glebe.co.uk/fdev.htm Anyone have any experience with this particular box? Thanks in advance.. |

No they are total rubbish, can I have it for my Camaro?
Only kidding they did actually fit the T5 in the 3rd gen Camaro but not the 5.7 engined versions as it could not take the torque so I have to use a Muncie 4 Speed but that sounds the business. I know years ago you could not get a set of gears for them as we had a guy using one in a normally asperated Sierra Cossy and he had to use the T5 because of the regs and I think at one stage he even contemplated commissioning a special set with Quaiffe. |

Regular T5 yes but only BW, so comments are not 100% for something made under licence
With your torque- No problems (I presume you are not using silly input speeds, not sure how they go with that, I know some guys in rotory's and that if you are running up around 9000 you may be in a bit of a red zone) |

Its an all steel 2.3 JRE XE, long stroke, which redlines at 9k, but its not a particularly peaky engine though, as having plenty torque lower down is far more preferable in gravel rallying. Its very rare to stay at high RPM's for long periods of time on the stages too, unlike circuit racing (Id Imagine) I'll see what Glebe say about this and if its an issue maybe install a gearbox oil cooler.. ? Thanks.. |
