Yeah the winner of the Daytona 300 was indeed Dale Earnhardt Jr. I watched NASCAR Racing for the first time and I think i'm hooked,it was an amazing sight seeing cars side by side lap after lap like that sometimes 3 abreast! that multi car crash near the end was quite spectacular too!!

Yeah Dale Jr contested the Busch series in 1998 & 1999, I know for sure he won the 1998 Buch series, I think he might have done so in 1999!

If you want some history on the Busch Series, I can recommend the recently published book "Second to None" by Rick Houston (David Bull Publishing). It's not a complete statistical record, but a very readable history with a chapter devoted to every year's championship from 1982 to 2000. Easily available in the UK from all the usual sources (Mill House, Chaters, Amazon, etc)for £20 or so, and no doubt just as easy to find elsewhere.

Having a heck of a time following this thread...lol. Dale Jr. won the busch championships in 98 & 99...with close battles with Matt. Matt actually dropped to 3rd at the last race in Homestead in 99 after crashing out of the last two races, I think? Definately the last race in 99 for sure. I still blame Jr. for costing Matt the championship that year. Matt was leading a race at Bristol or Dover? and Jr. was a few laps down after having trouble and he took Matt out trying to get one of his laps back...Matt really never recovered after that race....and then all hell broke loose for Matt the last two races of the season. that's why it was a bittersweet victory for Matt to win ROTY in 2000 for all the Matt fans...especially how Jr. came into 2000 with all the hype and Matt was an afterthought. I really like Jr., especially after the passing of his dad. He has really matured and settled down...at least on the track.
I know DE Sr. won a few of the busch races as part of his dominace at Daytona...just not sure how many? Last edited by Lars; 23 Feb 2002 at 17:16. |

Tony almost won a Busch race...but it turned out to Matt's 1st Busch series win. Last lap, last corner at Rockingham in 98...Matt took the air off Tony's spoiler *G* and got by him for the victory!!!

Looking at some of my old press guides, since I can't access the page at the new nascar dot com? LOL. Matt won the bristol race that year...so it was Dover that Jr. took Matt out. And Matt did finish 8th at the 2nd to last race that year (Phoenix), but he had problems the race before (Memphis) and after at Homestead. Just clearing up any confusion I caused, even though the tpoic was about something else.
