Gold Coast Indy - 2009
In one of his columns on www.speedtv.com Robin Miller (US open-wheel journalist) makes this comment about the status of Surfers Paradise in 2009
Quote:

Very much doubt that the event will go back to it's original March date.
They have point from the financial side of things to have back to back fly away rounds, but I think they'll find it hard to move the race and not have some of the other sports in the country object. |

What makes you think the IRL cares about the other sports in Australia?
If people here don't want to play, they won't come. Simple. the Indy race and Gp backed to backed many years ago in March... |

they will get SFA people out there if it's the same weekend as Bathurst, there is no contest there. aslong as it its later not earlier everything should be fine. the V8's will cope fine holding the event by themselves if they don't come here in 09. it might be wise for them not to come considering it's an exhibition and October seems tobe a heavy schedule of motorsport in 09.

Two things here:
Earlier season date won't happen because of the Cyclone Season - some of the early races (think the 3rd and 4th from memory) got caught up in this and caused havoc - the 3rd was at the tail end of the cyclone and, although a dry race, the lead up and practice were absolute nightmares - the 4th (again from memory) was literally a flood.. As for a clash with Bathurst - does anyone seriously belileve that just because Bathurst is on there would be no one at Surfers? Two completely different events and two completely different locations to draw spectators from. If Bathurst were, as suggested, able to draw all of the Surfers crowd away from SP, the crowd at Bathurst would be 3 times what they get. The world doesn't revolve around a V8 race. |

I love how a whole conversation has spurred from something that was never said... GC and Indycar have a multi year contract, the calendar for next year should be out in the next few weeks and I am sure that Japan, Australian and Indycar are working together to get something that works...

Has everyone forgotten that Indy Cars & V8's share equal billing ?
Any change mooted by Tony George would need the Black Wiggle's organisation to agree, especially a clash with Bathurst.... Or will the organisers simply jettison the V8's in the faint hope that worlds second or third best, (read second rate) open wheel series can stand alone on the Gold coast ? Something it couldn't do, just a few short years ago..... |

It's been said before - the GOld COast sees international exposure more important than local exposure/ratings etc - if they have to decide between V8's or moving the date to suit overseas TV coverage - no guessing which they will choose - and the V8's will just have to cry/threaten/***** about it again.

It makes you wonder if the Indy Racing League are holding off due to the economic climate. ie. increased travel cost through higher oil prices and softening USD.
or are the QLD Government prepared to subsidize the IRL circus? |
