Yes, many have died in the sports we love. But remember those who could have died and did not: Carpentier hit in the head four times (that he remembers!) with the back wheel of Mo Gugelman's car as it went over top of him; Richie Hearn, seven laps before Greg; Pedro Diniz, as his roll hoop and indeed the whole back end of his car came off and he landed in the dirt upside down; Peter Dumbrell and Marc Weber at Le Mans in the Flying Mercedes; Yanik Dalmas in the somersaulting ALMS car at Road Atlanta; and most recently Christophe Tinseau whose #4 DAMS Cadillac burnt to a cinder - yet who managed to take 8 seconds to steer a car in flames to the side of the piste and climb out and had no injuries other than singed eyebrows and a burn on his arm - and a scare he will probably not forget really soon.
It doesn't make up for those we lost - but I am grateful for the lives of those we did not. |
