metal casting question
i dont know if im making the right question here, but how much strength will a piece of metal loose when its melted and casted? im a bit of a noob about this, but is there some sort of rule of thumb for this type of things?
and how much can it be hardened before becoming too brittle? im gonna give shot here, but maybe i should be making this questions in a metal casting forum or something Thanks in advance |

What sort of metal are you talking about?
As long as the correct process are followed, regarding heat treatment and casting, then you should not have any issues retaining the strength of the metal. |

Actually, I do do heat treating in my garage, but then I have the proper furnace and other equipment to do so. But yes, you can't typically do the it at home.
I gave a very broad reply, as it was a very broad question being asked. If the actual type of metal was specified, I could have gone much, much deeper into it. |

thebear,
I'm not impressed either with a one-page Wikipedia article even if it includes links, as the be-all and end-all of metal working. These may be of interest, if not help: http://www.dansworkshop.com/Aluminum%20Foundry.shtml http://www-materials.eng.cam.ac.uk/mpsite/default.html http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalo...s/aluminfo.php and ICR, have a look at the list of 'similar threads' below. Good luck! John |
