Speeddemon555 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
New DTM Mercedes.

Mercedes Benz unveiled the 2002 Mercedes Benz CLK at the car show in Geneva. Those 2002 version of the CLKs Touring Cars will go to top teams in DTM such as Bernd Schneider and Jean Alesi while the mid-level team will get the updated 2001 version.

How "updated" do the '01s get? I assume they share the same engine and aero aids? The bigggest difference would probably be the chassis only? I recall a 2nd tier driver saying driving an updated '01 was pretty hopeless if winning a championship was the goal? Is that true? Has there been that many significant changes? I understand the Audi TTs underwent massive changes, largely due to a change in the wheelbase.

My recollection re; the Audi TTs is that they were uncompetitive in their first year largely due to handling problems associated with the length of the car.

In order to rectify this problem and to bring them in line size-wise with the Mercs and Opels they were allowed to lengthen the wheelbase. And on last year's performance this seems to have helped.

Thats one sexy looking car. Opel and Audi had better watch out and prepare for another season of Mercedes winning.

The old DTM merc was nice, but the new one is even better! Aren't all the Mercedes having the new chassis, but the older cars having the 2001 engines, with the AMG cars having the new engines?

Don't think so. D2 and Warsteiner are having the 2002 cars. Rest are having 2001 cars.

I was living in Germany last year, and the coverage the DTM got there was second-to-none. Live televised races, extensive pre- and post-race coverage from experts live there, post race midweek review, ARD, ZDF and DSF really did set a standard that I've never seen before for Touring Car coverage, even at the height of the Super Tourer years when the Beeb was broadcasting live races. Mmm, it was great...

The new merc does look smashing. However, I really, really hope Opel wins it this year. Not because of any particular preferance, but with profits going down there and a lack of success on the track, the Powers-that-Be at Russelsheim could decide to axe the DTM programme (I think there was talk of this before). And it'd be nice to see someone other than Schneider win it.
