2009 Dakar Rally
The 2009 Dakar rally has been lined up to take place in Argentina and Chile:

Well, it's not plain wrong, as it keeps the spirit of the Dakar running. But I hope that it is a "break" from Africa as Dominique Serieys says in that link.
The Dakar is an African event. We all know that it's so much more than a race - and the charitable and economic benefits of the race cannot be underestimated. The people in Dakar almost expect the race. Continuing with something at the start of the year is great, as it means that interest in the Dakar will continue. But a permanent move would be plain wrong... |

Hate to see the terrorists 'win' but the loss of the Dakar forever would be an even greater loss.
Looks like there's some good deserts high up in the mountains of South America that will serve the cars some good punishment |

I have to admit to a certain level of ignorance as to the terrain of the proposed route - I'm guessing it must have a least a passing resemblance to the African event otherwise there would be too much re-work needed to the vehicles.
Definitely agree that they need an event of some sort to take place at the Dakar time of the year otherwise it's in danger of fading away and that would be a real loss. |

I am only guessing as to the route - a workmate was telling me about the deserts up there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atacama_Desert
If they didn't go there it'd become a different type of rally. |

I think what they have now will be better and it interests me more to see Argentina and Chile. |

Shouldn't the race have a different name?

The Speed Channel (yes, Speed!) had a 2009 Dakar Rally preview yesterday on the Speed Report. They said that Robby Gordon's Hummer is of carbon fiber construction.
