Indonesia gone
Lippo Village Street Circuit Fails Construction Deadline London, Great Britain – A1GP World Cup of Motorsport has been forced to accept round five of its 2008/09 season, which was due to take place on 6-8 February 2009 at Lippo Village, Indonesia, can no longer go ahead. This follows notification this morning from the FIA that certain aspects of the track construction project, undertaken by the local promoter and organisers of the event, have failed to meet the requisite completion deadlines. As a result, the FIA is not able to issue the necessary circuit licence on time for the event to proceed, and has removed the event entry from its International Series calendar. This information was given to A1GP CEO, Pete da Silva, today and his comment was: “Obviously it is extremely disappointing for all concerned and not the news any of us wanted. The bottom line is, for safety reasons, A1GP cannot race on a circuit that does not meet or has not received the necessary licence from the FIA, so we have no other option but to cancel all plans to bring the A1GP show to Indonesia in three weeks’ time”. The series will now go from next week’s event, A1GP Taupo, New Zealand, to A1GP Gauteng, South Africa, which is on 20-22 February. A1GP do not plan to run the Indonesian event at a later date in Season Four, but may consider an event in Season Five. |

I sort of felt that Indonesia was not going to happen. Too bad.

When it was first announced I thought it was an absurd idea, but so much work seems to have gone into it and I believe much of the work has been done, so am now pretty shocked. I booked a flight to Jakarta the day before yesterday...

having races cancelled, moved and cars not ready in time is going to kill A1GP. I've loved the concept so far but this season is nothing short of a farce :S

Then it was excusable - teething problems if you will. But by now, it shouldn't be happening. I know there's always a risk going into unexplored markets, but it should be carefully managed. One problem is acceptable - this season so far is anything but. |

Not good at all.
And the Mexico date has been moved back a week. I hear there's also a problem with the Kyalami owners facing bankrupcy. They own shopping malls and owe a bank (ABSA Commercial Property Finance) millions and the bank is in the process of recovering the money. There's also a round of the World Superbikes at Kyalami this year .... |

Can you imagine the Valencia or Singapore F1 circuits not passing an FIA inspection and being cancelled three weeks in advance? FOM wouldn't let it happen.
Can only hope A1GP can see through these days and do better next season, however they need to do something to make sure these farces no longer happen. Agree with Asp that season 1 was excusable (actually I don't remember season 1 being this bad), lessons should have been learnt by now. |

They are still apparently trying to get the track finished to hold a round of the Indonesian GT series, which presumably doesn't need the top-level FIA license that A1GP does. -> http://a1.gpgrid.com/2009/01/18/heav...ppo-timetable/

If A1GP dies, then it is probably because it kills itself.
It NEEDS stable events that spectators, teams, promoters and media can count on. |

I wouldn't be surprised if A1GP dies. I would be mildly surprised if the entire system gets dissolved. There are some good concepts and system here. I'd hope for someone to pick it up and maybe change the name or what not.
The way A1GP is running the series right now, it's haphazard. So much uncertainty and so many last minute changes. Teams missing on the grid, racing rounds being scratched off, last minute changes to not only the point system but also the rules and regulations of the series. They have to get their act together! |

Or perhaps the FIA interprets their rules differently regarding to A1.. A1 did Durban and Beijing.. both events quite successfull if you ask me..
That knowledge isn't just lost in a year |

Well the GT race did obviously go ahead - not to everyones approval...http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/opini...icle/9636.html
They are still hoping for November - which is when a NZ round would also need to be. |
