And how often has that happened in the past 5 years? The Aston springs to mind, but beyond that?

(not even mentioning that you're making a good case for 2l turbos. That's what big manufacturers put in road cars)

Absolutely agree that diversity is one of the key elements of sportscars.

Having said that there is no reason that a 'World engine spec' could not be allowed to be eligible for say one GT and one LMP category. I dont think it should be exclusive and other engines should be allowed too, but why not allow it in.

The ACO would actually be stupid not to allow the engine to be eligible in some form if the idea came to fruition across other categories

You're right - teams will go to other formulas. The diversity will come with the bigger teams and manufacturers, if they allow it in.

I don't get it?! A 2.0L engine is already eligible in all classes of ACO racing! If someone comes up with a "World Engine" it would be allowed in under the specific rules for its class.

The jist that was presented in the original post was of: only this engine's core spec being allowed with changes to the ancillaries to conform to the particular genre of a particular sport. That is hog wash!! This engine being allowed into the ACO's engine formatting is fine as long as it is not expected to be the definition of a 2.0L engine in Sports Car racing! Nor to be promoted as such.

That may work for more 'spec' categories but it wont for sportscars and I am sure the ACO realise it. The point of my post, with which you seem to agree, was that it should be allowed but not as an exclusive engine in any category.

It was the diversity and technical challenge that was creating much renewed interest in sportscars before the economy died and I am sure that we were in for a golden period of sportscars as ACO style racing had appeared to have stolen a march on most other categories, which were heading more down the spec racing alley, by promoting innovation in alternative fuels and technology.
