Car in the lake????
When Will Hoy was reviewing the track on ITV's coverage when they got to Island circuit straight just before the hairpin he said "A Touring Car ended up in the lake a few years back"
Is he referring to Alain Menu in 1999 because if he was then it'd be really ironic because he sent him down there! Last edited by Invincible; 28 Apr 2002 at 21:21. |

I have a book about all of the racing tracks in the world, and in the part about Oulton it says Roy Salvadori crashed his Jaguar into the lake in the 60s or 70s.
Then again it would have been very ironic if he was referring to Menu |

Menu didn't end up in the lake, he ended up coming within about a metre or two to going in, but Hoy didn't put Menu there, Menu tried to overtake on the grass.
I can't make this into a who's fault it was kinda reply because this part of my post will get deleted |

Was Rouse the one who went into the water? With his RS500 Sierra?

I've seen a picture of Roy Salvadori's accident. Very nasty it looks too, with the Jaguar (Mk2 3.8) upside down and three-quarters submerged.
Thankfully Roy is still very much with us today. I do recall one story of a Lister-Jaguar sports car going into the lake, stopping with a jolt and floating. The recovery crews went to fetch it, at which point they discovered that the car wasn't actually floating, but had impaled itself on the end of a girder which was submerged. The driver too had narrowly missed being skewered, as the offending metal was only stopped by the last layer of the engine bulkhead. Some people get their guardian angels earning danger money. |

I may be completely wrong but I remember Charlie Cox having a massive crash and maybe ending up in water somewhere. I think this was maybe early to mid-nineties?

Charlie Cox did have a massive accident at Thruxton a few years ago (in a blue Mondeo) but there's no water there. I do remember watching a Eurocar go into the lake at Mallory Park a few years ago. It sunk so you could just see the number on the roof.

Could it be when Frank Sytner sent Alan Minshaw over the barrier in 1988, did Minshaw's M3 land in the lake?

i think he was probably reffering to menu, what surprised me about that crash was why barriers hadn't been put in place there before, surely someone must have had an inkling that a car could end up there one race!

Yeah, I think he was talking about Menu. I'm relatively new to Touring Cars, so I don't remember the Rouse incidents etc which you're all talking about. I remember the Menu one though, and he did come damned close to falling in. Think Hoy did a good job with the commentary on ITV. Better than that other Lemon whoever he was. Thought the conversation he had at the end with vicki butler-henderson (was it?) was really wooden. Made me laugh a lot. But then again, I don't get out much...

James Hunt ended up upside down in the lake when he was first starting out...

Pip, that's no real surprise. I bet he was betting with someone on how quickly he could do that...

Now, I thought twice about posting the James Hunt story, because I couldn't remember if it was Oulton or Mallory Park where he fell in the drink. I do recall the fellow he tangled with that day was a very young Tony Dron.

I don't think he was talking about Menu's incident, Menu didn't end up in the lake. More than likely it seems the incident Invincible is talking about, that happened in a similiar part of the circuit
