In that case, iirc, it was a small engined Alfa. It certainly looked like something that ought to be capable of a bit more than was happening. I suppose it is possible that it had lost its brakes and was being driven for a finish. From where I was watching it never seemed to be going fast enough to need brakes. I suppose it stood out because it really did seem to be just driving round rather than racing. No problem at a club meeting but a little disappointing at the Classic. Less so had it had a playmate. |

With historic racing being a recreational pursuit, rather than a first step on the stairway to a Formula One seat, grids are always going to be enriched by a wide diversity of cars and driving abilities. Am I the only one who gets a lot of pleasure watching cars running from the back of the grid?
Thinking Saab and DKW, three of my favourite moments in 2010 were watching a Saab in the Historic Touring Car race at the Gold Cup, a DKW running with Chevrons and Mustangs in the HSCC closed wheel invitation at the Walter Hayes Trophy and best of all two absolutely bonkers Frenchmen driving a Trabant at Dijon. Aesthetically I can imagine that some would turn their nose up at the smoking two stroke but for the vast majority of people historic racing is about competitors having fun and the wall to wall smiles of the Trabby team (and the whole pit lane) was wonderful. Chris for a mere £14k you too can enjoy the humour of a two stroke! http://www.racecarsdirect.com/listin...IA_Papers.html
personally I cannot see the point and having been in the Walter Hayes race with the DKW I actually thought the speed differential was quite dangerous on a short circuit. I had to brake when I realized how quickly I was gaining on it. Not the DKW drivers fault as he was being overtaken by someone else at the time and did exactly the correct thing and held his line.. we digress |

Would have thought you would have enjoyed closing quickly on another car.
Unusual experience for you. Weather crap here in France,. |

Here is a perfect example of a slow Saab out with us in a Post Historic Touring Car Race at Silverstone as described by Simon, I lap him on around 4:25 mins then again around 8 mins and on part two a couple more times as well, but the guy kept well out the way so no probs could have been a bit dodgy on one occassion as there was three of us battling for position when we came across him. Oh and Chunder you may find this boring to watch but from the hotseat it was brilliant I loved it and if this is boring you are one hard person to please! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kX9zqS-7AEw

I was also waiting for the Saab to unlap himself. And you should all come to Sussex - the sun is shining - honest! Last edited by Brian A; 7 Jan 2011 at 13:08. Reason: Weather report |

The Saab chap was in fairness to him racing that at an historic Le Mans event and had to get some stamps on his licence to qualify.

to put some balance onto this discussion some of the biggest grin racing I have enjoyed is in a not so quick 1220 Turner - the brake pedal is rarely touched and any car you overtake is an achievement so its not all about quick cars merely making sure the relationship between the front and back of the grid is not too distant.
I would happily co drive (if invited) the Turner in a pre 63 round but probably not in a Gent Driver at Spa!! Brian I hope it remains sunny as I am in sussex tomorrow!! |

Sorry Simon - you're already too late as it is raining again. Sunday is supposed to be the best day for weather down this way. I fully endorse your comment about 1220 cc of Climax engine - yours in a Turner, mine in the Elite - it is always great to do the giant killing thing. Most people just cannot believe how quick the little engine can go. Last edited by Brian A; 7 Jan 2011 at 15:33. Reason: Lost ability to spell momentarily |

they've suprised me as well, I never thought a 1220 would produce more grunt than a 1500 Ford engine
