X flow tappets
Sorry if this is wrong area, too many to choose from, also searched and no further forward!
Just rebuilt my crossflow engine, spec is BCF3 cam +40 pistons double valve springs Big valve head gas flowed head. Problem is the top end is noisy, someone please tell me correct tappet settings, had lots of suggestions, but none seem to help things! Richard |

use steel posts, spacers, not springs on the shaft, have tappet faces ground, 18/20 hot, alloy cover helps too.

there also a fair chance your valves are touching the pistons something quite common with a bcf3 cam

Apart from what Graham said have you made the push rod holes in the head larger ? as the push rods rub on the sides on full lift with a big cam .
You say a "big" valve head, are the valves touching the side of the bores ? These are 2 common mistakes with this engine |

easy to check though, get the cylinder at tdc on overlap, hook a spanner over the tappet adjuster and see how much further you can open the valve

Coil bound springs maybe ? (same check what Graham said)
I actually made a decent tool to do this job so we had 50 thou clearance before going solid on full lift. |

If some or one of the above is not quite right, check the pushrods aren't bent as well.
was the cam new? are the followers new, even if the cams not? are the followers free in the block, ie did they turn freely when inserted, they die very quickly indeed if they don't turn. |

And so it continues, have checked all the above and all good, now....
no oil at top end The oil pump is working as if i take the oil sender unit out of the block and turn it over, oil pours out. So (at last) the question is, could the releif valve be stuck open? All oil ways were clear prior to assembly, I have taken the rocker shaft off and pushed a welding rod down the oil way, the rod goes way beyond the head gasket until it reaches a firm stop. Suggestion/answers on this one please. Richard |

have the cam bearings been replaced? get one wrong and you can starve the topend of oil

If the pressure relief valve was stuck open you would have more than a top end rattle

Anyway, the Kent engine doesn't have a main "direct" oil feed to the rocker assembly but is fed from the front camshaft bearing via a slot in the cam at every turn.
Either as Graham said a bearing has been fitted wrongly (front has two holes) or the cam hasn't had the slot cut in it (unlikely) At least they are a piece of cake to work on !!! |
