NewYankee01 is heading for a stewards' enquiry!
world marshalling championship

ive just been watching espn classic's fantastic coverage of f1 in the 70's, and the great jackie stewart (as its a shame he chooses not to commentate anymore, anywhere) mentions marshals quite a bit during incidents compared to what brundle would nowadays.
He mentioned a marshals world competition?, im just wondering does anyone remember it as a marshal or mentioned anywhere in a motor racing magazine, awards presentation and maybe know why was it scrapped, i could imagine it may have been an afterthought or been poorly taken up or maybe even the only country bothering about it! is it because the british won it, like stewart said 3 times since it started! or was it something like the original race of champions and british f1 championship, all novel things at the time but something that just petered out?
would you like to see an international or barc/bmmc region to region championship that marshals would get recognition for total days marshalled in a year biannually or does it seem itd have no place in todays motorsport.
just something out of interest...

Most clubs (750MC, HSCC, BARC etc) have a "Marshal of the Year award", which seems to be largely based on the number of events attended.

The world mashal championship, was an award voted for bt the GPDA (grand prix driver association), on who they thought were the best mashals.

I dont know if any actual award was given.

Somewhere (!!!!) I have a letter from the MSA (or the RAC as it was in those days) thanking me for being on the team that 'won' the GPDA award in either 1968 or 1970 - I thought it was for flag marshalling. I think there was an actual trophy but where that resides - who knows?
How do you expect me to remember exact details after all this time?

I remember getting those letters too, John. I must have them filed away somewhere. Remind me to look when I get home in August - in Canada at present for Indy.
