There is nothing that says there illegal, but there are no regulations for a wankel and the ACO have said they have no intentions of creating any as the wankel is hard to balance with the piston engines or so they say.

Hmm, I see that as the inverse. The ACO did make rules that included the rotary, and it was Mazda who could not make a competitive unit within those rules. Things may have changed to allow this to now be a different scenario, not saying it will, but could.

I know this is a ALMS thread, but who says it will be an ALMS car? Mazda races rotary engines other places and the public work they have done with Hydrogen has been on RX8's. So maybe somewhere that races RX8's hydrogen could be introduced?

I came across the following picture of the 2012 Mazda MZR-R (AER P80) engine in the Sebring 2012 technical gallery of the Mulsanne's Corner facebook page.

The airbox is at the bottom of the engine and not on the top like on the original Mazda MZR-R (AER P41) engine.

First I thought that this was a recent change, but it turns that the position of the airbox on the Mazda AER engine was changed in 2009 or 2010.
