HU-09
In addition, I sold the car to George Hersher from Charleston, WV and have the original Bill of Sale. I do now recollect that it was around the time that Fred Kaimer either owned or was looking to buy the car that I made clear I was not the Robert Rahal referred to in all this supposed documentation. Interestingly Fred kaimer owned the Lola T286 2 liter car I drove in the 1977 Can-Am, which was then driven by Jim Trueman in the 1978 Can-Am then sold to John Timken in CT who then sold car to kaimer in late 90's. Timken owned car from 1978 til late 90s fyi.

Bobby, I thank you for your valuable and informative input regarding your Lola T 360 (HU09).
I purchased HU08 some time ago and I have been in search of the correct history ever since. I am looking for the correct and true history, warts and all. Although it would be nice to think that I have a "Rahal" car in my collection, it is more important for history to reflect fact rather than a wish or assitance with a previous sale. I want to get to the first and subsequent owners regardless of who they may be. I have an SCCA logbook with the first entry being in 1978. When I took delivery of HU08, it was supplied with the most detailed docmunentation file that I have ever seen (maybe this should of made me suspicious). Obviously, scams can and do happen, this one, if a scam is quite elaborate. Then again, maybe there is another Robert Rahal out there? Another Robert Rahal who may of owned HU08 at some time. To answer Chris Townsend's question regarding brake calipers, the answer is Lockheed. I would really appreciate any further information that may expose furtehr history of HU08, especially from the time form August 1974 through to the end of 1977. Any suggestions? |

After much research and investigation, finally, I am able to announce that there is a bullet proof history of HU08
HU08 was delivered to the first owner, Robert Young of Colorado in late 1974. Robert Young used the car up unitl early 1978 when the car was sold to Ron Clawson also of Colorado. All things remained straight forward until 1991 when someone advertised the car as having been the 1975 pro series car of Bobby Rahal. A letter from a "Robert Rahal" was even produced that attested to this. ALL HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE FAKE, A SHAM. No doubt the work of someone (and I know who it is) wanting to add the "Rahal" name to the car and increase the desirability and perhaps the asking price. HU08 had even been fitted with Lockeed brake calipers, the same brake calipers that had been ordered on HU09 by Rahal. The original build sheet for HU08 lists the calipers as AP. It is apparent that the deception was well planned and has obviously fooled many subsequent owners. Further stories were created, one being that "Rahal had tried to buy back his original car some years after he had sold it but the owner would not sell, so he purchased HU09 instead and decorated like his original". This is nothing but a story. Bobby Rahal, has his original pro series Lola in his collection and has all the supporting documents that go along with it. Regardless of the until now ownership doubts, HU-08 remains a beautiful and desirable car. It is pleasing to see the correct history is now with the car and that this forum serves as a public witness to this. Thanks go to Robert Young, who has been incredibly helpful and to Chris Townsend for his advice and assistance. |

I've been reading this thread with interest as I have HU5 in my workshop awaiting restoration for its current owner. He's had the car for about 20 years, not very long after it arrived in N.Ireland, having been converted to V6 power for the Scottish hills. Any information or photos would be gladly received to help us return it to original spec.

HU5! How interesting. So it survived Martin Mansell's accident at Brands in April 1979?
Do you know who owned in Scotland? |

I've no idea who had it in Scotland, I'll ask the owner but I think he's the second keeper since it came here. Am I correct in thinking it ran as an Atlantic in 74?

Hi Mick.
I have just finished a new tub and body work for my 360 using mostly original parts. The car is very original in fact I know all the owners. If I can help let me know, I can send pictures and measurements and any other information you may need. Regards Colin Haste |

Mansell crashed the car at Brands Hatch 29 Apr 1979 and we haven't seen any mention of it since then. It could well have been repaired and had a less publicised life in Scottish hill climbs so I'd be interested in any light you can shed. |

I spoke to Dermot Johnston, HU5's owner. He thinks the V6 may have been fitted after it came to N.I from Scotland, he didn't get the engine & box with it. We now have a fresh FT200 & plan to fit a BDA when the car's finished.
There's no evidence of serious damage to the tub, it can't have suffered badly after Mansell's crash. It's very straight and requires only local repairs and some rivets replaced. If I find out more I'll post it here, the local hillclimb community's not large so getting information shouldn't be too difficult. |

Since it's been two years since I last posted to this thread, I know I've added more 360 snaps to my Atlantic set.
The newer will be toward the bottom of the thumbnails.... http://www.flickr.com/photos/4668198...7623186773769/ All my sets..... http://www.flickr.com/photos/46681980@N03/sets |
