The one and only
Patsy Burt was the FIRST woman to win a NATIONAL title when she won the 1970 British Sprint Championship and she is still the only woman to have won an RAC/MSA NATIONAL title.

Tony Marsh with SIX British Hillclimb Titles may be considered the best although Andy Priaulx's World Saloon Title may just eclipse Marsh! |

The announcement of her death in the Times a couple of years ago went along the lines of 75 years and a DNF........... it was cracking!

Did she not develop/pioneer the use of the timing strut on her McLaren?

The only one!
Patsy Burt is still the only lady driver to win a British Sprint Championship round, in fact she won 6 rounds and set 3 new course records en route to the Sprint title in 1970.
She did set several FTDs on the hills but she never won a British Hillclimb Championship round with second place at Stapleford in 1960 being her best result. |

I can remember seeing her at some West Essex Car Club sprints and hill climbs when I was a wee lad.

My favourite Patsy Burt story came I think courtesy of Simon Taylor. After the Ladies Record at her beloved Shelsley Walsh was taken by Roberta (formerly Robert) Cowell in the late 50s, Patsy swiftly unretired to restore the status quo...

Did Patsy do any circuit racing or did she limit herself to hillclimbs and sprints?

Just checking in the relevant "Black Book" whther this was a Formula 2 race, and it was not , but on 1st September 1957 she was entered in a pukka F2 race at Snetterton. So there is some evidence that she probably took part in circuit racing at some time in her career. |

Unfortunately, Motor Sport's brief report of the 5th August Brands meeting (Pg 530 - September 1957 issue) lists only the winners, so no joy there.
Also, can't find any reference to the September 1st Snetterton meeting in the October issue. More research required, I feel. Last edited by John Turner; 3 Jun 2012 at 09:38. |

Just reading Tony Brooks' autobiography and lo and behold - 22 September 1956, Oulton Park Gold Cup meeting. Production car race won by Tony in Rob Walker's 300SL, second was Ivor the Driver in an XK140, and third Patsy Burt in her Aston DB2/4.
There's your answer. |
