FIM GPs - Bizarre Scoring Systems

YAUSS System

There are some bizarre although potentially interesting non-official scoring systems to be considered. I will try to put eventually some of them here in this... errr... bizarre thread.

One of them is YAUSS (Yet Another Useless Scoring System). I have used it in some former seasons to know how riders are doing. The system has two main rules: (1) not only race results are counted, but also fast race laps and qualifying; (2) wet conditions are down-weighted in the scoring.

The first four classifieds score 8-4-2-1
The first three fastest lappers score 4-2-1
The first two grid positions score 2-1
Maximum points are 14.

A wet race scores half amount in final classification (4-2-1) and fastest laps (2-1). Wet qualy also scores a half (1 for pole). So maximum points in a all-wet GP is 7.

Well, all of that looks enough useless to merit building classification tables. Here they go:

Code:
MotoGP
STO 7 9 12 2 = 30
LOR 10 6 5 4 = 25
PED 5 5 6 2 = 18
CRU 3 5 0 0 = 8
ROS 0 0 0 4 = 4
DOV 0 0 2 1 = 3

Moto2
MAR 13 6 12 2 = 33
ESP 2 8 8 0 = 18
LUT 4 2 3 5 = 14
ZAR 0 2 2 1 = 5
IAN 5 0 0 0 = 5
COR 0 0 0 4 = 4
KRU 0 4 0 0 = 4
RED 0 1 0 1 = 2
NAK 0 2 0 0 = 2
RAB 1 0 0 0 = 1

Moto3
VIÑ 13 0 7 1 = 21
COR 4 3 14 0 = 21
FEN 6 12 1 0 = 19
SAL 1 6 2 1 = 10
ROS 0 0 0 4 = 4
RIN 0 3 0 1 = 4
MON 0 0 0 2 = 2
KOR 0 0 0 2 = 2
ZUL 0 0 1 0 = 1
OLI 1 0 0 0 = 1
Now, if we want to it more robust against "freak" circumstances (as multi crash races, rare mechanical retirements, one day wonders, etc), one could drop the best and the worst scores in those tables. They has the evident rsult of greatly chopping the one-wonder riders (or once-lucky riders). The robust non-freak-events tables are:

Code:
MotoGP
STO 16 (12-2)
LOR 11 (10-4)
PED 10 ( 5-2)
CRU 3 ( 5-0)
DOV 1 ( 2-0)

Moto2
MAR 18 (13-2)
ESP 10 ( 8-0)
LUT 7 ( 5-2)
ZAR 3 ( 2-0)
RED 1 ( 1-0)

Moto3
VIÑ 8 (13-0)
COR 7 (14-0)
FEN 7 (12-0)
SAL 3 ( 6-1)
RIN 1 ( 3-0)
Between parenthesis, the max and min scores they will get in the next GP (i.e. Stoner will add a max of 12 points, and will get at least 2 points).

Nice? No, but it is "useless" and it is the original purpose of it

Useless indeed.

Are you saying that Stoner should be leading the table because he is the fastest? And inferring that the current system is not merrit based enough? Or is the point even more useless than that? Must be tough to pass time at 2nd Lagrangian...

I think most of people realize that Casey-Honda is the fastest (best) rider today. It is not well showed in FIM classification.

FIM scoring rewards consistency pretty much. It is ok in terms of interest for the championship, but it is not the fairest of the systems.

The same with Marquez in Moto2.

In Moto3, IMO Vinales and Fenati are the true contenders by the moment. You see they are amazing young riders. Cortese is doing a very good job at the moment but Salom and Rins are in a FIM classification position way ahead of their speed. In particular Rins only showed consistency but not top speed. My (weird ) system shows rightly that Fenati is much faster than Rins or even Salom.

But I don't claim FIM should change its system. It's a different thing an interesting system and a "fair" system. I find current FIM system produces good championship fights until the end.

After Catalonia:
Code:
MotoGP
LOR 10 6 5 4 13 = 38 21
STO 7 9 12 2 3 = 33 19

MON 0 0 0 2 0 = 2 0
KOR 0 0 0 2 0 = 2 0
Main changes:
  • Lorenzo is now just first.
  • Luthi "pips" poor Espargaro for 2nd.

  • Fenati is sinking like a (rolling) stone. Salom is surpassing him.
