RallyCross Tyres - please educate me.
Planning for Barbados RallyCross International at end of November 2013 is progressing.
I need to get a grip (ha!) on the tyre issues and current practices. As I understand it, tyres in US are supplied by Cooper and in UK by Avon. Max width is 8" and max wheel size is 17". Please explain how the tyres are sourced, numbered, policed and any problems with current tyre regulations. Bear in mind we'll be starting from scratch. |

Hi Greg,
Its not just Avon tyres that are used in Rallycross a number of drivers use Kumho who did sponsor the British Rx Champs for 3 years . Some of the classes over here also use the Yokohama AO48. The French Rx Championship is run very sucsesfully on Kumho Tyres and also go up to 18" |

Thanks Mel, that's good to know. We have an existing Kumho dealer here.
How do the Kumho tyres last? What compounds, tread designs are used? I rallied on Kumho molded slicks for years on a Cossy Escort but I'm assuming there is a special rallycross version? |

The Kumho deal for FRC has been ceased after 9 years, from 2013 on they have Avon for at least the next 3 years.
AFOR info of October 25 2012, translated by Google: After 9 years of working with KUMHO TYRES the championship of France Rallycross change tire supplier from 2013. AVON is the sole supplier for the next 3 years. It will provide competition tires for the championship of France and SuperCars Super1600, cutting France Division 3 and Division 4 and standard tires AVON Cup "Rallycross Twingo R1." The adhesion of the tire Avon Rallycross has already proven European Rallycross Championship for over 20 years. More generally, Avon racing tires are used in more than 140 leagues around the world. |

In the European championship you will see almost everyone on Avons and this is an open area so any manufacturer can be used - don't recall seeing many kumhos being used by anyone this year so guess that will tells you the best tyre to use. Not quite sure where you would source them from guess give them a call the Avon Motorsport website may be a start.

Thanks all.
It doesn't really matter to me which brand is the 'best'; what is important is that they last well, are easily accessible and available in a wide range of sizes. Since Kuhmo have a sizeable world-wide mainstream tyre business I'm guessing they are more likely to throw some money behind drivers and events. |
