New Rules

The new rules, running through the 2003 season...

- Freeze aerodynamic development on major components.
- Two-stage pitlane speed limiter
- Cars to be weighed with driver

Development of major aerodynamic components for road course cars will be frozen following Portland on June 16. Oval packages will be frozen after Chicago on June 30. Components covered by the freeze include the underbody, main side pods, rear wing assembly, engine cover, oval and road course nose, and the oval front wing assembly.

A two-stage pit lane limiter will take effect starting the Grand Prix of Chicago. The limiter will maintain a 50 mph limit the first time the driver engages it, 85 mph on the second and full control on the third.

The third change will require all cars be weighed with the driver. Previously, cars were weighed without the driver. It will take effect with the Grand Prix of Mid-Ohio on Aug. 11.

Do you think that the pit limiter issue is in response to Zanardi's situation? And I'm totally in favour of the driver-weight part. I wish they didn't have to freeze development, but I guess there was really no other option. Already there are too few teams and cars.

No they won't. CART had announced a chassis freeze back on May 15. With Tony George not allowing chassis produced for another series to be used in the IRL, why bother. Whatever CART runs, they will need different equipment for the Indy 500.

This fact, coupled with the fact that the 2002 CART chassis is much safer than the IRL car, prompted CART to "grandfather" the 2002 chassis for use in 2003. The cars will be modified to fit the 3.5 litre NA engine, but will be otherwise be unchanged. This move will reduce costs signifigantly for the CART teams, and will free up some cash-flow to purchase equipment for Indy.

They will look a little like F1s, the IRL cars look like hunchbacks...

So what about Reynard teams, will they be allowed to change to the Lola after Portland/Chicago?

Hello, Jordi.

It is likely that Lola will be the only chassis next year, unless someone (Walker being the most probable name) continues to use Reynard.

There has been a lot of talk about Swift supplying chassis in 2004 to CART.

Cheers,

Oh, you never know in this world... if they freeze the chassis development, teams like Player's/Forsythe can very well continue with the Reynard, as it's still quite good and they do their own R+D.
